Lalibela - Begin the day with a morning pickup from the hotel and embark on a trek to Wedebeye. The journey through picturesque villages and surrounding mountains offers a wonderful glimpse into the lives of Ethiopian Highlanders.
Asheton Maryam Monastery - Lalibela and its surroundings are rich in history, much of which dates back to the early Christian era and the 12th century. King Lalibela’s initial project before constructing the 11 rock churches in Lalibela was the Asheton Maryam Monastery. As the ascent towards the monastery progresses, the views become increasingly breathtaking.
Continue the hike to Wedebeye via the narrow path known as Merebabru, arriving in Wedebeye by late afternoon.
Wedebeye - Abune Yoseph (3800 - 4300m)
Abune Yosef - Begin the morning hike to Abune Yoseph mountain, the third highest peak in Ethiopia. The Abune Yoseph massif provides visitors with stunning vistas, birdwatching, and opportunities to observe flora and wildlife. The area boasts an impressive variety of flora and fauna, including giant lobelia, troops of gelada baboons, and the rare Ethiopian wolf. Situated north of Lalibela, the afro-montane environment perfectly complements the cultural and historical experiences of the Ethiopian highlanders.
Climbing to over 4,000m is challenging, but those who reach the summit find the views and experience immensely rewarding!
After spending time in Abuhay Gara and Abune Yoseph, return to the community lodge for an overnight stay.
