The Shalimar Gardens were designed as a Persian paradise garden to create a representation of an earthly utopia where humans coexist in perfect harmony with all elements of nature. Construction began in 1641 during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan and was completed in 1642. The Shalimar Bagh is famous for its chini khanas, or arched niches, behind garden waterfalls. These niches were illuminated at night with oil lamps, giving the waterfalls a fairy tale appearance.
