Riding Rapids and Revelations: A Day on Costa Rica’s Sarapiqui River
Trading my surfboard for a paddle, I ventured to La Virgen, Costa Rica, to experience the thrill of the Sarapiqui River’s rapids. Join me as I recount a day filled with adventure, nature, and the warmth of a family-run operation.
A Day on the Sarapiqui: Nature’s Playground
The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I found myself in La Virgen, Costa Rica, ready to trade my surfboard for a paddle. The Sarapiqui River, known for its pristine beauty and thrilling rapids, was calling my name. As someone who has spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America, the idea of navigating the river’s Class II-III rapids was an exciting change of pace. I was eager to see if the river could match the thrill of the ocean.
Upon arrival at the Sarapiqui Outdoor Center, I was immediately struck by the lush, vibrant surroundings. The property, lovingly maintained by a family who has been running this adventure for three generations, was a haven of tranquility. I could have easily spent the day lounging in the gardens, but the river was calling. Jordi, our guide for the day, greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of adventure. His enthusiasm was infectious, and I knew we were in for a memorable day.
Rapids and Revelations
As we set off down the river, the adrenaline began to build. Jordi expertly guided us through the rapids, each one with a name as colorful as the experience itself—“El Cano,” “Confusion,” “Superman,” and “Air Force.” The rush of the water was exhilarating, and I found myself laughing and shouting with joy as we navigated each twist and turn. Jordi’s knowledge of the river and its surroundings was impressive. He pointed out various wildlife along the way, and even helped me brush up on my Spanish, all while ensuring our safety was never compromised.
The river was a living tapestry of nature’s wonders. We paused to swim in the natural pools, the cool water a refreshing contrast to the sun’s warmth. It was a moment of pure bliss, floating in the river, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. As someone who spends most of their time in the ocean, it was a reminder of the diverse beauty that Costa Rica has to offer.
A Taste of Tradition
After a few hours on the river, we returned to the Outdoor Center, where a delightful surprise awaited us. What was described as a “snack” turned out to be a full, delicious lunch, prepared fresh and served with a side of warm hospitality. The family who runs the center made us feel like part of their own, sharing stories and laughter over a meal that was as nourishing as it was tasty.
The day held one more surprise—a lesson in juicing sugar cane using a traditional grinder. It was a hands-on experience that added a sweet note to an already incredible day. As we wrapped up, David, the owner, shared stories of his childhood in the area, giving us a glimpse into the rich history of this beautiful region.
As I drove away, with the sun setting behind me, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the day’s adventure. The Sarapiqui River had offered a different kind of thrill, one that complemented my love for the ocean and the carefree lifestyle I cherish. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world, I highly recommend rafting the Sarapiqui—it’s an experience that will stay with you long after the river’s roar has faded.
