Highlights

453-2 Tachibanachō - A secluded Zen meditation space is situated just a short five-minute journey by bus or taxi from Kyoto Station, adjacent to the Nishi Honganji temple, nestled within a classic Kyoto townhouse (machiya). This session offers an extensive 90-minute primer on Zen meditation, covering both its theoretical aspects and practical application, with a focus on achieving the correct stance for Zen’s ‘mindfulness’ meditation. Following the introduction, participants will engage in a meditative practice consisting of two 20-minute sessions of seated meditation (zazen), punctuated by a 10-minute interval of walking meditation (kinhin). Zen meditation can be practiced in the traditional lotus or half-lotus positions, or on a chair for those who prefer it. Central to Zen meditation are the techniques of breath and thought regulation, which hinge on maintaining the correct posture. The experience concludes with a half-hour for tea and a local Kyoto confectionery, both of which are included in the cost. During this time, attendees are welcome to pose any questions they might have. The aim of this program is to equip participants with the confidence and knowledge to continue meditating on their own, with a clear understanding of the Zen meditation methods and their underlying purpose.

What's Included

Additional Information

Kyoto has been the main center of Zen since it was brought to Japan from China in the early 13th century. As a result, Kyoto is renowned for its Zen-inspired gardens and more. However, the essence of Zen lies in the practice of meditation, as the word “Zen” itself means meditation. Despite this, short-term visitors to Kyoto often find limited opportunities to engage deeply in Zen meditation at Zen temples. This workshop stands out by offering a comprehensive introduction to both the theory and practice of meditation (zazen) under the guidance of Rev. Dr. Brian Victoria, an American-born Sōtō Zen Buddhist priest and scholar. Rev. Victoria will guide you through the principles and practice of Zen meditation, using traditional meditation cushions (or chairs if necessary) in a private meditation hall. By the end of the workshop, participants will feel confident in their ability to meditate independently.

Authentic Experience - I really enjoyed the afternoon with Brian and learnt a lot. I left feeling that I'd had an authentic experience that was different from the standard temples and tours elsewhere. First thing to mention is that it was much longer than expected - It ran from 1.30 until 6pm and could've gone on for longer - so allow the whole afternoon. The descrption undersells what it actually is - you get an overview and introduction from an experienced lecturer and published academic with a wealth of knowledge and insights into Buddhism and many aspects of Japanese culture and Kyoto. The fact that Brian is American also avoids any language barriers and means that time is spent getting to understand the topic at hand.

A dive into Zen Meditation - What a beautiful and unique afternoon we spent. In a few hours we took a deeper dive into the history and practice of Zen meditation. Brian was prompt, kind and incredibly knowledgeable. We had time to explore a temple, learn posture and both sit and walk meditate.

Execptional experience - This experience exceeded by far our expectations. Brian is a talented story teller, very calm, kind and has lots of knowledge! Because we had so many questions and both our schedules allowed, he extended our session free of charge. We are very grateful that we had the honour to meet Brian and we highly recommend this unique experience!
