At Tofuku-ji, there is the choice to explore the grounds on foot or cycle around the impressive walls before joining the iconic and cherished Kamo River. Cycling north along the riverbank, one can fully immerse in the ambiance of Kyoto.

The route exits the Kamo River path near Reisen Dori, passing by the visually stunning Heian-Jingu Shinto Shrine on the way to the majestic and tranquil Nanzen-ji, nestled in the forested foothills of Higashiyama mountain. Bicycles are parked to explore the spiritual Nanzen-ji complex on foot.

Following Nanzen-ji, a gentle climb is followed by a descent into the often overlooked district of Yamashina. In Yamashina, the serene Yamashina River is followed south, looping back to RRBJ Kyoto through the atmospheric district of Chushojima, famous for its sake brewing and charming canal.

This scenic riverside ride will take you on a wonderful cycling route along the quiet Uji and Yamashina Rivers before looping back into the historic and temple-filled Higashiyama district of Kyoto. The route deliberately avoids the crowded areas of Kyoto so the wheels can keep turning and you enjoy a nice 30km leisurely cycle ride. We explore beautiful Kyoto neighborhoods and vistas, as we ride up to the peaceful and secluded Sennyuji Shrine. A great ride for cyclists with a small window of opportunity for cycling while in Japan.
