Explore the charming streets of Kyoto (Kiyomizu-zaka), where it feels like stepping back in time. Kiyomizuzaka is an area made up of several streets that exude the traditional essence of Kyoto. These streets are lined with old teahouses, Japanese confectionery shops, and traditional sundried food stores, where Maiko and Geisha elegantly stroll. Our tour guide will lead you through this area, allowing you to soak in the unique and traditional Kyoto ambiance. In Kiyomizuzaka, we will also visit Yasakakoshindo, the most colorful temple in Kyoto, known for its unique worship practice. Worshippers write their wishes on vibrant balls and hang them at the temple, creating a lively atmosphere. Enjoy a leisurely walk through these scenic streets!

• Kiyomizu-dera Temple - Visit one of Japan’s most renowned temples.

Built on the site of the Otowa Waterfall around 1,200 years ago, the temple’s name is derived from the waterfall’s pure water. We will take you to the wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, 13 meters above the ground, offering a stunning view of cherry and maple trees and the city of Kyoto in the distance. We’ll also visit Otowa Waterfall, believed to bring good luck. The water is divided into three streams, each offering a different benefit. You can choose one stream, using a cup attached to a long pole, to drink and bring good fortune. Experience the Japanese way of worshipping with us!

• Kiyomizu-Zaka Street - Walk along Kiyomizu Zaka Street near Kiyomizu-dera Temple

This 1-km pilgrimage path to Kiyomizu-dera Temple starts where Matsubara-dori, once the southern main road of Heian-kyo, intersects with Higashioji-dori. The slope is peaceful with few pedestrians, but souvenir shops line the street from where it meets Gojozaka and Sannenzaka. Further up, there are many stores selling Kyoto souvenirs like pickles and yatsuhashi, with vendors calling out to visitors. A Kiyomizu doll shop is also located in front of the temple gate. The Niomon Gate and the three-story pagoda of Kiyomizu-dera Temple stand prominently at the hill’s summit.

• Sannenzaka Ninenzaka - Stroll through Sannenzaka Ninenzaka near Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Sannenzaka is a historic road, with a legend stating that its name “Sannenzaka” originated in the 3rd year of Daido (808) (various theories exist).

The most famous legend of Sannenzaka warns that if you fall on Sannenzaka, you will “die within three years” or your lifespan will be shortened by three years. This urban legend, as known today, was widely believed in the mid-Edo period. It is said to have originated because this slope once led to the burial ground of Toribeno, serving as a caution to “watch your step on the slope.”
