- Semenggoh Nature Reserve - For over two decades, the caretakers at this reserve have been educating young orangutans, who were either orphaned or saved from being held captive, on the essentials of surviving in the natural habitat. This initiative has resulted in the neighboring forest reserve being populated with a robust group of adolescent and young adult orangutans, who are now procreating in the wild. Although the program has now been moved to the Matang Wildlife Centre, Semenggoh continues to be the abode for its triumphant alumni, the semi-wild orangutans and their offspring. These orangutans largely wander through the forest but often return to the Centre for complimentary meals. During the forest’s fruiting season, some or all may not appear for feeding, which is an encouraging indicator of their progressing autonomy and a further advancement towards complete rehabilitation.
