At the third Ecumenical Council in 431 AD in Ephesus, it was claimed that Mary came to Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her death in 48 A.D. After the house’s discovery, the Archbishop of Izmir declared it a place of pilgrimage in 1892. On July 26, 1967, Pope Paul VI visited and prayed there.
• Ancient City of Ephesus - A 10-minute drive to Ephesus. We will start visiting one of Turkey’s main highlights, Ephesus, one of the 12 cities of the Ionian League (an ancient Greek district on the western coast of Asia Minor) located near Izmir. As a port city, it was a major departure point for trade routes into Asia Minor. Walk through history along marble streets lined with magnificent public buildings, including the Baths of Scholastica and the Library of Celsus, built in the early 2nd century A.D. by Gaius Julius Aquila as a memorial to his father, Gaius Julius Celsus Polemanus, the proconsul of the Province of Asia. The Temple of Hadrian and the Grand Theater are two of the most impressive buildings in Ephesus. The Grand Theater was built in the 3rd century B.C. and later expanded to accommodate 24,000 spectators by the Romans in the 1st century A.D.
• Bizim Ev Hanımeli Restoran - Traditional lunch at Bizim Ev Hanımeli Restaurant.
• Sirince Koyu - After lunch, drive up to the charming old Turkish-Orthodox village of Sirince, located atop a mountain, where you can enjoy the impressive vineyards and peach trees. The village is a blend of Turkish and Greek cultures, where we will visit a mosque and an Orthodox church. All the narrow streets of the village are filled with women selling various handcrafts and olive oil. Another attraction of Sirince is its wine; try its taste in small cafés.
• The Temple of Artemis - Our last stop is the Temple of Artemis, once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. After visiting the Temple of Artemis, drive to Kusadasi town center and the port.
• Kusadasi - Arrival at Kusadasi City Center. Drop off at the Port of Kusadasi, the city center, or your hotel. The end of our services.
