- Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjeter) - The Kruja Bazaar is renowned as one of the oldest in Albania. This captivating marketplace in Krujë was constructed over 400 years ago and served as the hub for free trade among the city’s most prominent merchants. It was here that traders first began to officially exchange various goods. Conveniently situated on the main road to the Castle of Kruja, the bazaar is part of the museum while still fulfilling its traditional commercial role. Whether you’re looking for a traditionally-crafted rug or expertly-made copper products from the skilled artisans here, you’ll find everything you need! Other intriguing items include authentic handcrafted goods and silver jewelry known for its longevity. Over the centuries, the bazaar has expanded, influencing the development of housing and urban structures around it, making it the true heart of Kruja.
- Museumi Gjergj Kastrioti (Skenderbeu) - The Skanderbeg Museum offers visitors a wonderful insight into the significance of one of Albania’s most revered national heroes. This site is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in the nation’s rich past!
The ruins of Kruja Castle are visible at the base of Kruja’s mountain. Within the castle lies the National Museum of “Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu,” commonly known as the Skanderbeg Museum, dedicated to Albania’s most celebrated hero. Skanderbeg’s ability to reunite Albanian families divided for six centuries made him a pivotal national figure. His return to Kruja after his childhood in Turkey eternally linked his name to the city. He led the country during one of its most prosperous times, forming an army that successfully resisted the Ottomans for 25 years until his death in 1468.
- Kruja Castle - Among the ruins within the castle walls stands the Old Clock Tower, featuring the same bell that once tolled to announce Skanderbeg’s death. This clock, crafted by artisans from the Old Bazaar of Krujë, once regulated the city’s time, including shop hours and prayer times. Near the clock tower is the National Museum “Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu,” designed by Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha, part of the team behind the Pyramid of Tirana. Built in the early 1980s, this iconic museum structure crowns the castle walls and has become a symbol of the city’s skyline. Inside, exhibits provide insights into Skanderbeg’s life, his historical victories, and achievements, along with replicas of his weapons: his distinctive helmet adorned with a goat’s head and his sword.
