- Tonle Sap Lake - Board a local boat for a serene journey on the Tonle Sap, navigating through the floating village of Chong Khneas. As Southeast Asia’s largest lake, Tonle Sap spans the northwest region of Cambodia and is a vital source of various fish species. During the wet season, it expands to ten times its usual size, offering a rich array of aquatic resources and serving as a habitat for numerous water bird species. Chong Khneas, a floating village at the lake’s edge, is predominantly inhabited by Vietnamese people, known for their vibrantly colored homes. Experience the unique floating village lifestyle as you pass by floating houses, schools, clinics, sports halls, and even pig farms. A stop at the Gecko Environment Center will provide insights into the ecology and rich biodiversity of Tonle Sap and its surrounding floodplains.
- Kampong Phluk Floating Village - Continue the boat journey to the fishing village of Kompong Phluk, where houses are elevated on stilts. This village is primarily inhabited by people of Khmer origin. Residents relocate their homes according to the season, living on stilts during the rainy season and moving to small huts near the banks in the dry season. Visit the pagoda, the only structure not built on stilts, and observe the villagers’ daily routines. Optionally, from August to January, transfer to a small canoe paddled by locals to explore the dense mangrove forest. These mangroves are remarkably adapted to the flooded environment, surviving complete submersion for part of the year. After visiting Kampong Phluk Village, you will be returned to your hotel in Siem Reap.
