- Banteay Kdei - As you approach under a majestic entrance tower (gopura) on your right, you are about to enter “the fortress of cells” or “the citadel of chambers.” Banteay Kdei was completed in the early 13th century in the Bayon architectural style—remember those giant Buddha faces? A Buddhist monastic complex was established on the site of a 10th-century temple.
- Ta Prohm Temple - We have already visited a temple reminiscent of a Tomb Raider movie. Now, we stand next to Ta Prohm temple, where the actual movie with Lara Croft was filmed. Consequently, it quickly gained popularity and may now be crowded—I don’t recall seeing so many tourists in the game or the movie!
- Ta Keo - Welcome to another Mount Meru! Ta Keo temple is somewhat different. It is constructed entirely from sandstone, making it the oldest sandstone Khmer building. Its massive appearance is due to the absence of external decorations. Could it be a Hindu artistic concept favoring simplicity?
- Chau Say Tevoda - At the same crossroad where we turned to Thommanon, turn in the opposite direction. Chau Say Tevoda is visible from there, less than 100 meters away. Chau Say Tevoda resembles a twin temple to Thommanon. Scholars debate whether Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda are truly twin temples built during King Suryavarman I’s reign or if Thommanon was started a few decades before Chau Say Tevoda.
- Thommanon - Situated along the way to Ta Keo and Ta Prohm, Thommanon temple is one of the best-preserved classical Angkor style sites in the area. This elegant temple was built during Suryavarman II’s reign in the first half of the 12th century. Compared to Angkor Wat, Thommanon temple was constructed around the same time Angkor Wat’s construction began. However, the final work on this temple concluded at the end of the 12th century. Archaeologists and art historians deduce this from the style used for the carving of women.
- Terrace of the Leper King - This terrace is located on the north side of the Terrace of the Elephants—aligned with it but standing separately. It is the highest part of the terraces surrounding the royal square of Angkor Thom. Built in the late 12th century during Jayavarman VI’s reign, this terrace was named after the statue that stands on it. When discovered, the moss and discoloration gave the statue the appearance of a person with leprosy. Coincidentally, the king who moved the Khmer empire’s capital near Angkor Wat,
- Tep Pranam - To explore a specific part of Angkor’s history, we have reached the Buddhist shrine Tep Pranam. Unlike most Buddhist temples dating back to the 9th century, Tep Pranam was not originally a site of any Hindu cult. Initially, a small wooden Buddhist shrine from the 9th century, it was expanded over time with Naga balustrades, Lion sculptures, and a laterite cruciform terrace.
- Bayon Temple - We are about to enter the central temple of Angkor Thom—Bayon. We can climb the stairs at the entrance gate and walk along the walls that form the first floor of the gallery. Speaking of which, the walls themselves are fascinating for their carvings. There is a specific term for this type of carving called bas-reliefs, meaning low-reliefs as opposed to high reliefs. Enough of the linguistics, back to the carvings. They are rich with stories. We can see the Khmer army on the march, a naval battle, and a market scene.
