Phnum Sampov - Phnom Sampov Sampeau Mountain
The killing caves of Phnom Sampeau are a historical site from the Khmer Rouge era, located on Phnom Sampeau, a hill 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Battambang in western Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge executed victims at the top of the cave, near a daylight shaft, and then disposed of the bodies into the cave. Men and women were placed in separate caves, with clothing in another. Traditionally, several caves at Phnom Sampeau (Sampeau Hill) have served as Buddhist temples. Today, a large glass memorial stands in the cave next to the skulls and bones, alongside a golden reclining Buddha, accessible via a staircase. A memorial made from cyclone fencing and chicken wire contains human bones at the base of the stairway.
Wat Banan Temple - Banan Temple Phnom Banan Temple is the best-preserved Khmer temple in Battambang Province, featuring distinctive five towers similar to the larger and more famous Angkor Wat. At the mountain’s base, a laterite staircase flanked by nagas leads to the temple.
The 11th-century temple was constructed by King Udayadityavarman II, son of King Suryavarman, and despite some looting, it remains in better condition than Wat Ek Phnom. It was built to honor and thank the gods, reflecting the strong belief in deities during that era, particularly in Hinduism.
Battambang Bat Caves - The Bat Cave is a fascinating attraction for visitors to Battambang city. Most tourists visiting Battambang around 4:30 pm proceed to Phnom Sampov to explore this mountain, and by 5:30 pm, they gather near the cave (200m away) to watch the bats emerge daily. The bats appear between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm, depending on the season. Tourists can enjoy a few beers while waiting for the bats.
Bamboo Train Battambang - Upon arrival in Battambang, the journey continues to Preaek Dambang ឃុំព្រែកដំបង for a Bamboo Train ride. The Bamboo Train offers a unique and novel experience for most tourists visiting Battambang Province. View pictures of Angkor Cab’s customers enjoying the bamboo train ride.
After meeting at the hotel in Battambang, the journey will continue to Banteay Chhmar and then to Siem Reap.
Banteay Chhmar - After meeting at the hotel in Battambang, the journey will proceed to Banteay Chhmar on Road N5, taking approximately 3 hours. There will be opportunities to stop for photos along the way if desired.
The expansive temple of Banteay Chhmar, along with its satellite shrines and reservoir, is one of the most significant yet least understood archaeological complexes from Cambodia’s Angkor period.

Similar to Angkor Thom, the temple of Banteay Chhmar was completed during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the late 12th or early 13th century. One of the temple’s shrines once housed an image of Srindrakumararajaputra (the crown prince), a son of Jayavarman VII who predeceased him. The temple doors document Yasovarman I’s unsuccessful invasion of Champa.
The extensive Old Khmer inscription found at the site (K.227) is now displayed in the National Museum, Phnom Penh.
