Highlights
  • Royal Way (Droga Krolewska) - ROYAL ROUTE – a former route of the royal retinue’s ceremonial processions. It runs from St. Florian’s Church, past the Barbican, along the preserved fragments of the city walls and St. Florian’s Gate, through Floriańska Street to the Main Market Square and through Grodzka and Kanoniczna Street to the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill. A wander along the royal route allows for seeing the most precious churches and the most interesting tenement houses of the city. A part of the route (St. Mary’s Basilica – Wawel Hill) is being traversed to this day in the ceremonial processions, such as church processions at Corpus Christi or funeral processions towards Wawel Hill or the necropolis in Skałka. - Krakow’s Rynek Glowny Central Square - This is the place of the most “mosts”: the most important public space in Kraków, the most expansive Market Square of medieval Europe, it gathers everything most characteristic of the city and has its most distinctive hallmarks, and last but not least: the most beautiful, the most important, the most charming, the most… - Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) - One of the symbols of city, a pearl of renaissance architecture, Kraków’s oldest “commercial centre”: Sukiennice or the Cloth Hall is one of the most important elements of the architectural heritage of Kraków. - St Mary’s Basilica - A history spanning over eight centuries, a high altar by Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz), a bugle call, the star strewn murals by Jan Matejko covering the vaulting: all this in a single church! Moreover: in the very centre of Kraków! - Ulica Kanonicza - Kanonicza Street - An exceptionally picturesque little street, where every house boasts a long and rich history, often reaching back to the first half of the 14th century. - Wawel Royal Castle - The spectacular renaissance palace that we admire today atop Wawel Hill is the result of the refurbishment of the Gothic Royal Castle in the first half of the 16th century according to the wishes of Sigismund I the Old (Zygmunt Stary). It was the abode of Polish kings and their closest family, while the stately halls provided a backdrop for courtly and political life. - Wawel Cathedral - The most important house of worship in Poland, whose imposing interior symbolically testifies to the continuity of the historical memory of generations of Poles. The last resting place of Polish kings, national heroes, eminent poets, and the patron saint of Poland – Bishop Stanislaus. For centuries, the venue of coronations.

Wonderful Old Town Tour with Local Guide - I was fortunate enough to be the only person on this tour for the day. It was exceptional! Christopher (Krzysztof) met me right at 10:30 to begin the tour. I was really overcome by all the history of Poland he was explaining and in 'awe' of the wonderful statues representing the different kings and noblemen he was pointing out on the walking tour. He took me thru the streets of Old Krakow and pointed out different buildings where Pope John Paul lived and went to priest school where Chopin lived - The Wawel castle was amazing and we even saw a brand new exhibit that had just opened. We ended our tour at a wonderful Cafe and just sat and discussed what was shown. I'd highly recommend this tour and note that there is ALOT of walking, but not at a fast pace and you can take your time. I do recommend attaining a certified-Guide as Krzysztof is as there are many 'so-called guides for hire' that are not certified and give improper information and facts. My Guide was Krzysztof Ciacma and his email is [email protected] as he was an exceptional Guide and was born and bred in Krakow his entire life. I could not have had a better person to show off their city -

Good Overview of the City - We had this tour on our first full day in Krakow and our tour guide was very knowledgeable and informative. Gave us a good overview of the city and told us about the history of the city, as well as some tips on what we could do with our spare time in the city which was very useful. The castle tour was completed by a different guide, this part of the tour was also very good. Overall the tour was great as a way of seeing all of the tourist areas in the city.

Good overview - We took the 5 hour all day tour with DiscoverCracow. It gives a good overview but it needs to start earlier as there is a lot to see and it was quite rushed at the end before the visit to Wawal Castle. It would have been good to spend more time in the Jewish Quarter - this was also a bit rushed. Some members of the group had anticipated a coffee stop which is in the description of the tour - but this did not happen - there was barely a comfort break. Starting at 9.15 would have been better and given time for a break as there is a LOT of walking. We found it all very interesting though and the guide was very informative. The Castle tour also tends to be a bit rushed. Maybe individual tours take longer time??
