Upon arrival in Oswiecim, you’ll have a brief pause for coffee or to explore the surroundings. A knowledgeable local guide, accredited by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, will then greet you and lead your tour.
- Panstwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau - Upon reaching your destination, a professional guide will welcome you and guide you into Auschwitz I, passing through the gate inscribed with Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Sets You Free).
The Auschwitz-Birkenau complex was established in 1940, replacing old Polish army barracks. Initially intended to detain Polish POWs and political prisoners, it operated until its liberation by advancing Soviet forces in 1945. During its operation, over 1.5 million Jewish, Polish, Italian, and French prisoners were brought here, with 1.1 million exterminated in what became the largest genocide in human history, leaving survivors deeply scarred for life.
The Auschwitz complex includes original buildings, roads, fences, watchtowers, railway ramps, and the death wall. You can visit some of the barracks in the Auschwitz I complex, which now house a collection of original exhibitions, documents, and items stolen from prisoners upon their arrival at the camp.
- Brzezinka - The second part of the tour takes you to Birkenau (Auschwitz II), the largest of over 40 camps and sub-camps in the Auschwitz complex. Initially planned as a camp for Soviet POWs, it eventually became a concentration camp for prisoners of various nationalities and a center for the extermination of Jews. Construction began in October 1941 by slave laborers, on the site of the displaced and mostly demolished village of Brzezinka, three kilometers from Auschwitz I.
Designed to hold 125,000 prisoners at once, inmates were destined to die from cold, hunger, disease, and exhaustion. Prisoners were treated as expendable and easily replaceable labor.
You will witness the unimaginable living conditions that prisoners had to endure. You can walk through preserved camp barracks and see the rail ramp where the infamous Dr. Mengele oversaw the selection process of new arrivals, deciding in an instant their fate of life or death in the gas chambers, which were only 200 meters away.
- Krakow - After the tour, you will have at least 20 minutes to visit a bookstore, grocery store, or simply take a break. Then, after another 1 hour and 15 minutes on the road, we will return you to a designated location in Krakow.
