Located in a unique gulf that shares its name, Kotor has been a significant historical, strategic, and trading center. Founded around the 6th century BC, Kotor is like an open history book, showcasing traces and records from various historical periods. Today, the Venetian influence is most prominent, as Kotor was part of the Venetian Republic for a considerable time.
- Kotor Old City - Walking tour of Kotor. Visits in the Bay of Kotor and a walk through the Old City. Our stroll begins at the lower part of the city, the Bay of Kotor, and the Marina. We will head towards the Old City through the “Sea Gate,” a symbol of the city’s resistance and liberation from WWII in ‘44. The Old City is very charming. We will wander around the small squares, surrounded by typical quarters, and visit some of the Old City highlights for their architecture, historical significance, and style.
- Lezhe - Driving from Tirana to the Buna River and the border to Montenegro. We will leave Tirana at 07:00, heading north. The northwest of Albania is mainly flat and is one of the country’s main trading and industrial areas. Passing through the historic city of Lezha, we will soon reach the Buna River. It is the only navigable river in Albania, and following its course, we will head towards the border to continue our Montenegro tour. Coffee stop by the river.
- Kotor Fortress - The St. John Fortress. Walking in the upper part of the city. The Kotor tour continues in the upper part towards the Castle of St. John. Walking along the cobblestone zig-zags, we will reach the Fortress of St. John. It was a crucial point in the city’s overall defensive system. The walk takes about 30 minutes from the lower gate but offers one of the best views of the “Mediterranean Fjords.”
- St. Tryphon Cathedral - The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon. Visits to one of the two Roman Catholic churches in Montenegro. This Roman Catholic church is one of the two in Montenegro, as most of the country now follows Eastern Orthodoxy. The cathedral was consecrated on 19 June 1166. Compared to other buildings, the Kotor Cathedral is one of the largest and most ornate structures in Kotor.
- Sveti Stefan - Driving back. Last stop in front of St. Stefan Fortress. St. Stefan dates back to the 15th century as a fortified fisherman’s family settlement for better sea control. It was first transformed into a hotel complex during the Yugoslavian Communist era under Tito’s rule. Since 2005, it has been part of high-end tourist resorts, with visits limited to hotel guests. After St. Stefan, we will drive back to Albania, marking the end of the tour.
- Budva - Driving south. City tour of Budva. After finishing the Kotor tour, we will continue driving south along the picturesque Riviera and tiny rocky beaches. Budva is one of Montenegro’s most important tourist cities, with a fascinating history dating back 2,600 years.
