Amazing experience in Tokyo - What an amazing experience to see sumos train! Beautiful discovery of this mysterious and legendary discipline thanks to the comments and explanations of Kaz, our Guide for the morning. To make eyes closed if as we are curious you 😃 If you are lucky you will surely see legends of this sport, we had the honour of attending a training run by a former Yokozuna (the best player).

High-class Sumo experience - We had an amazing experience on the Gion Guided Walking Tour with Japan Wonder Travel. Our group of 5 thoroughly enjoyed the morning, especially the chance to witness well-known sumo champions during their training—a unique and memorable experience for us as foreigners! Our guide was knowledgeable and engaging, making the tour informative and fun. The meeting point was easy to find, and the tour started right on time. During the training you are not supposed to talk so make sure to ask any question beforehand or afterwards. Taking pictures is ok during and the wrestlers are available for some group shots when training finishes. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to learn about Japanese culture up close!

An unforgettable experience - I joined Japan Wonder Travel in a Sumo Fighters’ Practice/Training, and wow!, what an experience! Even if you don’t know anything about Sumo, the guide will explain the basics so you can understand what is happening and learn many new things about this ancient japanese sport. We had the chance to see two professional fighters there, watching and training the apprentices. You will be able to see them fighting, exercising, practicing the basic movements, and the whole ritual of preparation and closing of the session. In the end, we had a photo with them. At a previous practice I joined few months ago (also with Japan Wonder Travel of course), at the end of the practice the fighters even cooked Chanko Nabe and other delicious foods for us, and we all ate together. I will never forget that, it was amazing!!! If you are a big fan of Sumo, or even if you are just looking to learn more about Japanese Traditions, I totally recommend joining this experience, you will love it.

Exciting sumo practice class - I had the incredible opportunity to attend a free sumo practice class with Japan Wonder Travel, and it was an experience I’ll never forget! Watching sumo wrestling up close for the first time was both thrilling and educational. The practice session was intense, and it gave me a deep appreciation for the discipline and skill involved in this ancient sport. The atmosphere was engaging, and the staff made the experience fun and accessible, even for beginners like myself. Highly recommend this unique and enriching experience to anyone interested in Japanese culture!

Sumo practice tour - This tour deserves five stars for the authenticity of the experience! Not every day you have the chance to visit the stable where a legendary yokozuna is coaching and to see the sumo wrestlers in action. The duration of the tour (1.5 hours watching the morning practice), allows you to notice the details of the training environment and the sumo bouts. As talking is not allowed during the practice, the tour guide was distributing guides and notes explaining what is happening at the moment. You also have a chance to ask any questions afterwards. A great experience! Wishing the young sumo wrestlers all the best!

Up close sumo - It was a great experience overall to watch the practice. It was even a little longer than expected. To see the techniques and the skill they practice was a once off opportunity. Most people were given paper with the information but I was forgotten, so if it happens to you, make sure to ask for the paper because it explains about the tradition and the wrestlers information so it’s important to get the paper ! If you aren’t used to sitting on the floor to extended time, I recommend sitting at the very back so you can lean on the wall!

A close view of the morning practice - The morning practice was very interesting! We could see a lot of practice fights and some of the training exercises the sumo fighters do regularly. We sat very close to the dohyo and really could see everything. It is okay to take pictures and short videos and a picture with the fighters after practice. The guide was very helpful and explained a lot of things before and after the practice. You are not allowed to eat while watching the practice and you have to stay until the end, so make sure to have breakfast before! Drinking water is okay. A very interesting and enjoyable experience to be so up close to the daily life of the sumos!

Sumo wrestlers in action — up close - As a spectator, I was sitting on a raised platform right next to the small practice area at the sumo stable. It was a front row seat to see sumo wrestlers sparing with each other, doing specific exercises, and getting advice from champion wrestlers. A great opportunity to take videos and photos during the practice and afterwards with the wrestlers.

Wow! Is it really just a practice? - It was an excellent experience! Not to be rude but I imagined the “practice” to be more relaxing routine exercises. I was totally wrong!! The sumo wrestlers were wrestling with all their might, and it was so intense and exciting to be watching. It makes me realize that for a short moment on the dohyo(ring) of a tournament, they dedicate so many sweats, pain and hard-work that we usually wouldn’t know. A big respect to the sumo wrestlers. Also, I was lucky to be seeing the previous yokozuna “Hakuho” coaching. It feels so unreal to be seeing someone who I saw a lot on TV. Our guide, Mako-san was very knowledgeable about the sumo culture and tournaments. Overall it was a nice tour that I would recommend to my friends.
