Highlights
  • Komarnica - The Nevidio Canyon was the last canyon in Europe to be explored (1965). Even today, fewer people have visited Nevidio than Everest. It features a series of waterfalls and narrow passages between rocky walls. The canyon begins at a depth of about 60 meters. In some areas, you can only pass by going under or through the rock. Nevidio stretches about 4 km in length and is sometimes less than ½ meter wide at the bottom. The beauty of Nevidio is indescribable.

The Nevidio Canyon is part of the River Komarnica, which originates at the foot of the southern slopes of Durmitor, specifically in Dobr Dol. It winds through the passages between the peaks of Boljski Beams (2091m) and Lojanika (2091m) before reemerging in a valley as a permanent river.

The Little Komarnica merges with the River Pridvorica near the village of Duži, forming the Grand Komarnica, which continues down the canyon until it flows into the artificial Piva Lake, created by the construction of the Mrtinje hydroelectric power plant.

Additional Information

The final canyon, the Nevidio, was explored in Europe in 1965. It’s a succession of waterfalls and confined passages between the lofty walls of the canyon. From the top, it plunges about 60 meters down. In some parts, the only way through is beneath or even inside the stone. The Nevidio covers a distance of approximately 4 km, and at places, it is less than 1/2 meter broad at the base.

The Nevidio Canyon forms a part of the Komarnica River, originating from the southern mountainsides of Durmitor, specifically Dobr Dol.

The Little Komarnica merges with the Pridvorica river close to the Duži village, forming the Grand Komarnica. This larger river continues its journey through the canyon before it drains into the man-made Piva Lake, a result of the construction of the Mrtinje hydroelectric power station.
