Embracing Kolkata’s Heritage: A Tramway Journey
Kolkata, a city where the past and present coexist in a harmonious dance, offers a unique opportunity to explore its rich heritage through the Tramway Tour. This tour, available from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on both January 25th and 26th, takes you on a nostalgic ride through the city’s historic streets. The Calcutta Tramway, India’s oldest operational tram system, is not just a mode of transport but a living museum of the city’s colonial past.
Begin your journey at the iconic K.C. Das, a historic sweet shop where you can indulge in traditional Bengali sweets before setting off. As you traverse the city, you’ll visit landmarks like the Tipu Sultan Masjid and the Sacred Heart Church, each with its own story etched in the annals of history. The tour also includes a visit to the Smaranika Tram Museum, where you can immerse yourself in the fascinating history of Kolkata’s trams, from horse-drawn carriages to the modern-day marvels.
“Tram Museum Tour - The tour guide Haris was good. The sweetmeat tasting was real fun. We visited the Tipu Sultan’s Mosque and the Sacred Heart Church and their history was mind blowing. The tram museum and the tram ride was nostalgic. Got to see the underwater metro also. So this tour was a mix of old and the new in transit system of Kolkata. I will say a must try.” - Reviewed on 2024-10-29
A Day of Tranquility: Shantiniketan Excursion
For those seeking a serene escape from the city’s hustle, the Shantiniketan Day Tour offers a perfect retreat. Available on January 25th, this full-day tour begins at 7:00 AM, whisking you away to the tranquil landscapes of Shantiniketan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by the visionary poet Rabindranath Tagore, Shantiniketan is a testament to the fusion of education, culture, and nature.
As you journey through this peaceful haven, you’ll explore the Visva-Bharati University, Rabindra Bhaban, and the lush Sonajhuri forest. Each site offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of Tagore, whose influence permeates every corner of this cultural gem. The tour includes a comfortable train ride from Kolkata, ensuring a relaxing and immersive experience.
“Shantiniketon - A Place for Tranquillity - Shantiniketon was always a dream place for me. Shantiniketon is a name which takes me back to an era of famous cultural importance and heritage. We travelled from Sealdah station by train in an AC compartment and reached Bolpur station after 3 hours. Muzaffar hired a taxi and took us to the most significant places of Shatiniketon. Chatimtala, Visva Bharati University, Rabindra Bhaban, Rabidranath Tagores five houses, Museum, Amarkutir, Srijani Shilpagram, Sonajhuri forest and many other places were in our itinerary. Muzaffar was the perfect tour guide for my friends and I. He impressed us with his knowledge of Kolkatan culture and history. He was generous with his time too, offering to take photos for us, recommending nice places to eat and have coffee, and being flexible with our schedule. I would highly recommend Shantiniketon, with Muzaffar as the tour guide, to any travellers interested in exploring the Kolkata region.” - Reviewed on 2023-02-20
