- Belur Math - Established in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, the principal disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Belur Math serves as a hub for spiritual development, education, and the dissemination of the teachings of both Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.
The architecture of Belur Math is distinctive, merging Hindu, Islamic, and Christian elements to represent the message of harmony and unity that Swami Vivekananda passionately advocated.
At the center of the complex is the Sri Ramakrishna Temple, a magnificent and beautifully crafted shrine dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. The temple contains his sacred relics and is renowned for its towering spires and detailed carvings, which incorporate architectural styles from all over India.
- Dakshineswar Kali Temple - Situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, a tributary of the Ganges, approximately 12 kilometers north of Kolkata’s city center, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple is celebrated for its impressive architecture. The grand main temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali and is surrounded by several smaller shrines honoring other deities.
The main temple is an exquisite five-spired structure built in the traditional Bengali “Nava Ratna” (nine-spired) style. Its presiding deity is Goddess Kali, revered here in her powerful form as the Divine Mother. The black stone idol of Kali stands upon the chest of Lord Shiva, symbolizing the profound connection between the two deities.
