Rajamalai (Eravikulam) National Park - Located approximately 15 km from Munnar, Eravikulam National Park is Kerala’s first and largest national park, renowned for being the natural habitat of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. Managed by the Kerala Department of Forest and Wildlife, Munnar, the park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to not just the Tahr but also several lesser-known species, including the Nilgiri marten, small-clawed otter, ruddy mongoose, and dusky striped squirrel. Seasonal visitors like elephants also make their way to the park during certain times of the year.
The Rajamalai region serves as the designated tourism zone within the park, offering visitors a chance to explore its scenic beauty and unique wildlife. However, private vehicles are not permitted inside, and visitors must use the park’s authorized transportation for their journey. Additionally, Eravikulam National Park remains closed for nearly two months each year, typically in February and March, to protect the Nilgiri Tahr during its calving season.
