Highlights
  • Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine - Fushimi Inari Shrine: there are more than 10,000 Fushimi Inari in Japan, but this shrine is the headquarters of Japan. There are 10,000 torii gates in the mountain. To reach the top, you need three hours. We walk around one-fourth of the shrine ground. The famous 1000 Torii gates are included.

  • Shoren-in Temple (Shoren-in Monzeki) - Shoren-in: The fire that occurred downtown 300 years ago destroyed almost the whole city. The Imperial Palace burnt down. The emperor moved to the east of Kamogawa River and lived here for some years. So Shorenin used to be the emperor’s residence. You can see Kyoto’s Imperial Palace only from outside but here in Shorenin you can see the emperor’s room inside. Its cultural value is priceless.

  • Kinkakujiyu - Kinkakuji: You cannot leave Kyoto without seeing Kinkakuji. So famous, so popular internationally.
In the 16th century Malco Polo wrote in his book, “There is a golden building in Japan.” Today, you can see the golden building just in front of you. But, please listen. Nobody knows the original Kinkakuji 700 years ago. I invite you to its original Kinkakuji. You can see “invisible” Kinkakuji through my Kinkakuji story.

  • Nijo Castle - Nijo Castle: there used to be hundreds of castle palaces throughout Japan. Today, only Nijo Castle Palace survives. Inside are the tiger’s rooms. I tell you the hidden meaning of these rooms.

Additional Information

This tour is planned for tourists from Kobe or Osaka Port. Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, Hiroshima, and Osaka are within a day-trip zone. Kyoto is recommendable for fans of Japanese history and culture. Beautiful scenery, Gion walking, and food are also fun to experience. Nara is a sanctuary for Shintoists and Buddhists, inviting you to deep spiritualism. In Osaka, you will enjoy food and young energy. People are friendly. Osaka Castle is a must-see spot. Himeji Castle is an ideal place for history fans—a half-day tour. Going around Himeji and Osaka Castle is possible, but it is a little busy. From time to time, cruise clients on the same ship ask for guides around Kyoto separately. I may ask you to share the tour with another group. In that case, your tour cost will be lower. As cruise excursions have time limitations, please contact me individually.

A great tour of Kyoto with Mike - Mike was the best. He took us around to visit Nijo Castle, Kinkakujiyu Kinkakuji, and Shoren-in Temple. We learned much about Japanese culture, the struggle and harmony between the emperor and shogun and samurai, Shinto and the zen gardens and its five elements. Fascinating! Thanks to Mike for taking care of our senior group of four and myself, and making sure we got back to our ship safely. We highly recommend doing this tour with Mike.
