Knossos Archaeological Site - The Knossos archaeological site is the heart of the Minoan civilization and served as the capital of Minoan Crete. The primary attraction is the Palace of Knossos, featuring:
- the Great Palace, the largest preserved Minoan palatial center, housing the royal quarters, workshops, shrines, storerooms, repositories, the throne room, and banquet halls.
- the Little Palace, where the renowned Bull’s Head made of steatite was discovered, now displayed in the Knossos museum.
- the Royal Villa.
- the House of the High Priest.
- the Caravan Serai, which served as the entrance to the palace and functioned as public baths.
- and the Royal Temple Tomb-Sanctuary, believed to have belonged to one of the last Minoan Kings.
- Venetian Walls and Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis - The Venetian Walls were part of the city’s fortress, known as Candia by the Venetians. Two city gates, Chania and Kainouria, have withstood the test of time. Visitors can stroll outside and around the walls. At the southwestern corner of the City Walls lies the Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1947), the esteemed local author of “Zorba the Greek” and “The Last Temptation of Christ,” recognized as one of Greece’s most significant authors. Enjoy the panoramic views of the city center and the stunning sea.
- Cathedral of St. Minas - The Cathedral of St. Minas is dedicated to Heraklion’s Patron Saint. It endured significant damage from past battles and took 30 years to rebuild. Adjacent to the grand Cathedral is a smaller, older St. Minas church, and nearby, visitors can explore the former church of St. Ekaterini, which now exhibits Byzantine ecclesiastical treasures and icons.
- Morosini Fountain (Lion’s Fountain) - Morosini’s Fountain, or Four Lion Square, was built during the Venetian Era to meet the needs of Candia, the island’s capital. Today, it serves as a popular meeting spot for locals, surrounded by shops offering coffee, ice cream, and other treats. Opposite the Fountain is the Basilica of St. Mark, a significant Venetian-era building now housing the Municipal Art Gallery, open to the public almost daily.
- Loggia - The Venetian Loggia, located in the heart of Heraklion city, was constructed by Francesco Morosini during Venetian rule. This impressive Venetian-era building has endured through time and currently serves as Heraklion’s Town Hall.
- Castello del Molo (Koules) - The Venetian Fortress Koules, also known as Castello a Mare or Rocca a Mare by the Venetians, stands prominently at the entrance of the Venetian Harbor, primarily built to protect the city.
