• The Palace of Knossos - Located 5 km southeast of Heraklion in the Kairatos river valley, Knossos was the center of the Minoan civilization. As Crete’s most renowned historical site, it is recognized as the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on the island and is often called the oldest city in Europe. Initially settled by a Neolithic community in the seventh century BC, Knossos remained inhabited for several millennia until its abandonment in 1375 BC following its destruction, marking the end of the Minoan civilization. The first major excavation was conducted in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos, a wealthy art enthusiast, during the period of Turkish rule in Crete. This was succeeded by extensive excavations led by Sir Arthur Evans from 1900-1913 and 1922-1930, which revealed the entire area surrounding Knossos.
• Heraklion Archaeological Museum - The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion ranks among the largest and most frequented museums in Greece and is also one of the most significant museums in Europe. It houses artifacts from all eras of Cretan prehistory and history, with exhibitions spanning over 5,500 years from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Minoan collection features exceptional examples of Minoan art, many of which are considered masterpieces. Situated in the heart of Heraklion, the museum was constructed between 1937 and 1940 by architect Patroklos Karantinos on the site of the former Roman Catholic monastery of Saint Francis, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1856. The building’s colors and materials are reminiscent of certain Minoan frescoes.
• Rethymnon - Rethymno is located on the northern coast of Crete, approximately midway between the major cities of Chania (58 km west) and Heraklion (79 km east). It is the only town on the island built on a cape. Rethymno offers two distinct experiences: the expansive beach and the historic old town with its blend of architecture and history. The imposing Venetian castle “Fortezza” dominates the city, alongside numerous orthodox and catholic churches, mosques, the old lighthouse, grand Venetian-style mansions, arches, and cobblestone paths, creating an enchanting atmosphere that has inspired countless visitors to stop and capture its beauty in photographs.
