Riding the Endless Wave

As a seasoned surfer who’s spent countless hours chasing the perfect wave across Central America, I was intrigued by the idea of wakesurfing on a lake. Table Rock Lake in Kimberling City, Missouri, promised a unique experience, and I couldn’t resist the call of the water. The idea of surfing an endless wave, shaped just for me, was too tempting to pass up.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by Joey, a local professional wakesurfer and the 2023 WWA Masters Wakesurf Champion. His laid-back demeanor and infectious enthusiasm immediately put me at ease. Joey’s passion for wakesurfing was evident, and I knew I was in good hands. The lake was a serene expanse of blue, surrounded by lush greenery, a stark contrast to the ocean waves I’m accustomed to.

Joey’s expertise was apparent as he explained the intricacies of wakesurfing. He had an impressive knowledge of the various wakesurf boats and how to dial in the perfect wave. While I was there to hone my skills, I couldn’t help but notice the joy and excitement of a family who was also taking lessons. Joey’s ability to work with all ages was remarkable. The family, with kids aged 21, 15, and 6, had never tried wakeboarding before, yet Joey had them all up and riding in minutes. His patience and encouragement were key, especially with the youngest, who was initially hesitant.

Watching them conquer their fears and experience the thrill of wakeboarding was heartwarming. It reminded me of my own early days of surfing, the sense of accomplishment and pure joy that comes with mastering a new skill. Joey’s coaching style was a perfect blend of instruction and fun, making the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.

The family’s excitement was contagious, and it was clear that this was the highlight of their vacation. It was a testament to Joey’s skill as a coach and his ability to create a memorable experience for all his clients.
