-
Muckross Abbey - Established in 1448, this religious site features the ruins of an abbey, showcasing a remarkable example of a vaulted cloister and a yew tree in the central courtyard. The grounds are home to many intriguing and photogenic gravestones.
-
Torc Waterfall - Standing 20 meters or 66 feet high, Torc Waterfall is a breathtaking sight, especially after rainfall. A gentle 5-minute path leads to the waterfall, running alongside the river through a mossy forest, offering numerous opportunities for photography with a camera or phone.
-
Lakes of Killarney - Several stops are made to explore and capture the stunning lakeside views from the forest’s edge.
-
Ladies’ View - Named after a visit by British Queen Victoria to the Killarney area in 1861, this scenic view is one of Ireland’s most famous. With several roadside stops and viewpoints, visitors can enjoy spectacular panoramas of the mountains, forest, and lakes of Killarney National Park. Time is spent at two viewpoints, capturing the beautiful scenery with cameras and phones.
-
Moll’s Gap - Moll’s Gap is a mountain pass and scenic viewpoint on the Ring of Kerry, situated between Killarney and Kenmare. From here, visitors get their first glimpse of the Black Valley, beneath Ireland’s highest mountain range, the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. After leaving this spot, the journey continues to Kenmare for a break of about an hour.
-
Kenmare - During the break, there is an opportunity for lunch and to explore the artisan shops of this charming town.
-
Lough Brin - Following a break in Kenmare Town, the journey continues along a network of narrow single-lane roads and “bearded” tracks leading to the scenic and remote Lough Brin. Here, a rural landscape with sheep and a few farmhouses is set against green rolling hills beneath rugged peaks. As the journey leaves this valley via another mountain pass into the Black Valley, magnificent views and remnants of ancient settlements can be seen below the narrow track.
-
Black Valley - The Black Valley is one of Ireland’s most remote areas and was the last to receive electricity from the grid. This rural paradise features narrow roads winding below the peaks of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, revealing magical and untouched terrain, hidden from most tourists. Rolling green hillsides beneath the mountain peaks encompass a land of waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, bubbling rivers, and cascades. This beautiful landscape includes forestry, woodlands, sheep farms, and the iconic ruin of “Molly’s Cottage” at the valley’s far end.
-
Gap of Dunloe - Formed 25,000 years ago at the end of the ice age, the Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass running north to south, connecting the Black Valley with the northern side of the Iveragh Peninsula. From the Head of the Gap, this narrow road twists and winds through a “V” shaped valley, passing over charming stone bridges and alongside lakes, offering a series of breathtaking views. Several stops are made along this road to explore and capture the stunning scenery.

I’ve been a regular visitor to County Kerry throughout my life, as my mother was originally from Dingle. I’ve been living in Kerry for over 20 years and I’ve spent the best part of the last 30 years discovering great locations to capture the beauty of the area as a landscape photographer.
