These monks were esteemed scholars, and it is believed that the High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, studied on Innisfallen Island. Over a span of 300 years, 39 monks compiled what is now known as the Annals of Innisfallen, a historical record of early Ireland written in both Irish and Latin.
