Muckross House, Gardens & Traditional Farms - This 19th-century Victorian mansion is located in Killarney National Park. The house is situated near the shores of Muckross Lake, one of the three renowned lakes of Killarney, celebrated globally for their beauty. Muckross House serves as an excellent starting point for exploring this stunning landscape.
The house was constructed for Henry Arthur Herbert and his wife, Mary Balfour Herbert. It was the fourth residence occupied by successive generations of the Herbert family at Muckross over nearly two centuries. The design was crafted by Scottish architect William Burn. Construction began in 1839 and concluded in 1843.
In the 1850s, the Herberts undertook significant garden enhancements in anticipation of Queen Victoria’s visit in 1861. The Bourn Vincent family later continued this gardening legacy after purchasing the estate from Lord and Lady Ardilaun in the early 20th century. During this period, the Sunken Garden, Rock Garden, and Stream Garden were developed. - Ross Castle - Ross Castle is located on the edge of Killarney’s lower lake and was constructed by O’Donoghue Mór in the 15th century. The castle later came into the possession of the Brownes, who became the Earls of Kenmare and owned a large portion of the lands now part of Killarney National Park. According to legend, O’Donoghue remains in a deep sleep beneath the waters of Lough Leane. Every seven years on the first morning of May, he rises from the lake on his splendid white horse and circles the lake. Anyone who catches sight of him is believed to be blessed with good fortune for life. The large rock at the bay’s entrance is known as O’Donoghue’s prison. Ross Castle was the last stronghold in Munster to resist Cromwell, eventually falling to General Ludlow in 1652.
A one-hour cruise on the Lakes of Killarney can be arranged on The Lily of Killarney (additional cost).
- Torc Waterfall - Torc Waterfall is a 20-meter high, 110-meter long cascade waterfall formed by the Owengarriff River as it drains from the Devil’s Punchbowl corrie lake at Mangerton Mountain. The waterfall is located at the base of Torc Mountain in Killarney National Park, 4.3 miles from Killarney in Kerry, Ireland.
- Killarney National Park - Killarney National Park spans 10,000 hectares, offering an unforgettable blend of mountains, lakes, woodlands, and waterfalls. The park includes the lakes and Muckross Estate, featuring the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park, which was gifted to the State in 1932 as Ireland’s first National Park.
