Kigali - Arrive at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your accommodation in Kigali for an overnight stay. If your flight with Qatar Airlines arrives before 1pm Kigali time, you have the option to proceed directly to Nkuringo in the southern Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or take a city tour.
Day 2: Kigali – Cyanika- Nkuringo Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Kigali Genocide Memorial - At 8:30am Rwanda time, depart from Kigali with a city tour, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Afterward, cross the border to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest via Cyanika. After clearing customs, continue to Nkuringo via Kisoro.
Day 3: Community tour, Nombe and Buniga Forests (encounter with the Batwa)
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - After a hearty breakfast, enjoy birdwatching in Nombe Pocket Forest, which was once part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The forest can be reached on foot (approximately 1 hour to go and 2 hours to return) or by vehicle, and the visit lasts around 2 hours, depending on guest interest. After lunch at the lodge, depart at 2:00 pm for the Buniga Forest Trail Walk, an informative project run by USAID and the local Batwa community. The Batwa tribe was forced to leave Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in 1991 when it was declared a UNESCO Heritage site for gorillas. They had lived as nomadic hunter-gatherers in harmony with the forest for millennia. Now, they earn a living by sharing their heritage and previous way of life. The walk continues through the community to visit a traditional herbalist and a blacksmith.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking Activity in Bwindi – Nkuringo / Rushaga
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - After breakfast, at around 7:45 am, with packed lunch and drinking water, transfer to the National Park Headquarters for a briefing on the dos and don’ts while with the gorillas. Then, proceed to the forest to begin the gorilla tracking. The rainforest’s beauty is spectacular, with a dramatic, steeply forested landscape crisscrossed by numerous animal trails. The time and terrain vary depending on the movements of the gorillas. Observing these gentle and endangered giants is an exciting and memorable experience. Tracking can take place at Nkuringo or Rushaga (1-hour drive from Nkuringo), depending on the gorilla permits obtained. Upon return, relax at the lodge. At 5:00 pm, you can either stroll through the community center or drive to the “Top of the World,” a football field high up in Nkuringo offering amazing views of the surrounding peaks and forests. It’s a great way to stretch your legs after gorilla tracking and enjoy a sundowner.
Nkuringo – Cyanika – Kigali International Airport
Kigali - Early in the morning after breakfast, transfer to the Cyanika Border via Kisoro town and continue to Kigali for your departure flight.
