Pedal and Trek: Discovering the Wonders of Ketchikan’s Tongass Forest
Drawn by the allure of the Tongass National Forest, I embarked on an electric bike and hike adventure in Ketchikan. The promise of exploring this lush wilderness, with its vibrant wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, was too enticing to resist.
A Journey into the Heart of the Tongass
As I embarked on the Ketchikan Adventure, I was filled with anticipation. The Tongass National Forest, with its lush greenery and vibrant wildlife, had long been on my list of must-visit places. The idea of exploring it on an electric bike, followed by a hike, was irresistible. The journey began with a scenic van ride from the bustling docks of Ketchikan, where our small group of adventurers gathered. Our guide, Raven, exuded a calm and knowledgeable presence, setting the tone for the day.
The electric bikes, powered by clean hydro energy, were a marvel. As someone who spends much of her time advocating for sustainable practices, I was thrilled to see such eco-friendly technology in action. The pedal assist made the ride smooth and enjoyable, even for those in our group who hadn’t ridden a bike in years. The road, aptly named the “road to nowhere,” led us through breathtaking landscapes, with the ocean on one side and the dense forest on the other. The air was crisp, and the sun peeked through the clouds, casting a golden hue over the scenery.
Into the Enchanting Rainforest
Arriving at the edge of the Tongass, we transitioned from our bikes to the hiking trail. The forest enveloped us in its embrace, a living tapestry of towering trees and vibrant undergrowth. The trail was well-maintained, with paths and steps guiding us deeper into this natural wonder. Raven’s expertise shone as she pointed out the diverse flora and fauna, sharing stories of the forest’s history and its vital role in the ecosystem.
The sound of a waterfall grew louder as we approached, its cascading waters a mesmerizing sight. We paused to take in the view, the mist from the falls cooling our faces. The trail continued along a salmon spawning stream, where we were fortunate enough to spot a few of these incredible fish making their journey upstream. The forest was alive with the sounds of nature, a symphony of birdsong and rustling leaves.
A Celebration of Nature and Community
As we made our way back to the marina, the sense of camaraderie among our group was palpable. The shared experience of exploring such a pristine environment had brought us closer together. Back at the marina, we were treated to a delightful spread of smoked salmon and vegan snacks, a perfect end to our adventure.
Reflecting on the day, I was reminded of the importance of preserving such natural treasures. The Tongass National Forest is a testament to the beauty and resilience of nature, a reminder of why I am so passionate about conservation. This journey was more than just a tour; it was a celebration of the natural world and the efforts to protect it for future generations. I left Ketchikan with a renewed sense of purpose and a heart full of gratitude for the experiences and connections made along the way.
