The shamisen arrived on mainland Japan in the 16th century and gained significant popularity throughout the 17th century.
The shamisen is a traditional musical instrument that resonates with the soul of the Japanese people.
However, most Japanese have never had the opportunity to touch a shamisen or hear its live sound. Notably, only a few dozen individuals have inherited the tradition of singing “Goze,” the songs of blind female traveling entertainers who are now a part of history.
In this workshop, you will explore the history of the shamisen and the Goze. Additionally, by experiencing a live performance of the powerful and rustic Goze songs, you will connect with a Japan that even many Japanese people are unfamiliar with.
You will also have the chance to take home a handmade mini-shamisen, allowing you to bring the soul of Japan into your home with its resonant sound!
