The Tsum Valley, once completely isolated from modern development, was only opened to tourism by the Nepalese government as recently as 2007. Located in the Gorkha district, it includes two remote villages named Chumchet and Chhekampar. The name ‘Tsum’ is derived from the Tibetan word ‘Tsombo,’ meaning vivid. Historically, Tsum Valley was a unique place both geographically and culturally, hence it was referred to as ‘Tsum Tso Chuksums,’ signifying thirteen provinces governed as a single territory. The trail ascends the valley of the Budi Gandaki River, passing through wild and unexplored areas primarily inhabited by the Gurung ethnic group. The valley also boasts a rich Buddhist heritage, with the Buddhist saint Milarepa believed to have meditated in the caves within these mountains.
