Explore Thamel and Surroundings
Thamel - Located in Kathmandu, Thamel is a haven for tourists visiting the city. It features numerous hotels, restaurants, and shops catering specifically to Western tourists. Situated in the northern region of Kathmandu past the government district on Tridevi Marj, it has been popular with Westerners since the 1970s when hippies discovered it. Although it has become quite commercial, Thamel is easily accessible from anywhere in central Kathmandu. The roads can be busy during the day, with heavy traffic.
Narayanhiti Palace Museum - The Narayanhiti Palace Museum, the former royal palace, is situated in the heart of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. It served as the chief residence for the nation’s sovereign rulers until Nepal became a republic in 2008. Now a museum open to the public, it offers Nepali citizens and international visitors the chance to explore the Narayanhiti Palace Museum.

Ason - Ason, also known as Asan, is a ceremonial, market, and residential square in central Kathmandu. It is one of the most renowned historical locations in the city, famous for its bazaar, festival calendar, and strategic location. Ason is a fine example of a traditional Asian bazaar, predominantly inhabited by the Tuladhar, Maharjan, Shrestha, Bajracharya, and Shakya castes.
Kirtipur and Patan Durbar Square
Kirtipur - Just 5 km southwest of Kathmandu, the tranquil town of Kirtipur exudes a sense of faded grandeur with its impressive medieval temples scattered throughout its backstreets. When Prithvi Narayan Shah invaded the valley in 1768, capturing Kirtipur was a priority to launch attacks on the Malla kingdoms. Despite strong resistance, the town was eventually taken after a bitter siege. The inhabitants paid a heavy price for their bravery, as the king ordered the noses and lips of every male inhabitant to be cut off, sparing only those who could play wind instruments for his entertainment.
Patan Durbar Square - Patan Durbar Square is a historical site with numerous attractions around its premises. The Newari architecture and monuments are the main highlights of this ancient place, located in the center of Lalitpur city in Nepal. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of its attractions is the ancient royal palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur resided.
Entrance Fee: USD 3
Changu Narayan and Nagarkot
Changunarayan Temple - The ancient Hindu temple of Changu Narayan is situated on a high hilltop known as Changu or Dolagiri. Surrounded by a champak tree forest and a small village called Changu, the temple is located in Changunarayan Municipality of Bhaktapur District, Nepal. This hill is about 7 miles or 12 km east of Kathmandu and a few miles north of Bhaktapur, with the Manohara River flowing beside it. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple is held in special reverence by Hindus and is considered the oldest temple in Nepal’s history. The Kashmiri king gave his daughter, Champak, in marriage to the prince of Bhaktapur, and the temple is named after her.
Changu Narayan Temple: USD 3
Nagarkot - Nagarkot is renowned as the top spot for enjoying Himalayan views from the comfort of a hotel balcony. Located just 32 km from Kathmandu, the village is filled with hotels along a ridge, offering one of the broadest views of the Himalayas, with eight ranges visible (Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Everest, and Numbur). Timing is crucial, as the mountains often hide behind cloudy skies. The best viewing seasons are October to December and March to April, when clear skies are more likely.
Dhulikhel, Namobuddha, and Panauti
Dhulikhel - Dhulikhel is a popular spot for observing the high Himalayas. From the ridge’s edge, a stunning panorama of peaks unfolds, from Langtang Lirung (7227m) in the west, through Dorje Lakpa (6966m) to the massive Gauri Shankar (7134m) and nearby Melungtse (7181m), and as far as Numbur (5945m) in the east. The typical itinerary includes two nights with a side trip to the sacred stupa at Namobuddha, a 12 km drive or three-hour walk south. Unlike other popular viewpoints, Dhulikhel is also a genuine Newari town, with a temple-lined village square and a life beyond tourism.
Namobuddha - Featuring a large Buddhist monastery, a famous stupa, and a wonderful, ecologically sensitive resort set in a lush forest, Namobuddha is a place where Siddhartha Gautama would feel at home. Along with Bodhnath and Swayambhunath, the Namobuddha Stupa is one of the three most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal, attracting many Tibetans from Nepal, India, and Tibet.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square
Bhaktapur Durbar Square - Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the plaza in front of the royal palace of the old Bhaktapur Kingdom and is one of three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The complex consists of at least four distinct squares (Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Dattatreya Square, and Pottery Square), but the entire area is informally known as Bhaktapur Durbar Square and is a highly visited site in the Kathmandu Valley.
Entrance Fee: USD 15
Drive to Bandipur
Manakamana Temple - A tiered pagoda with Himalayan views, the mountaintop Manakamana Temple dates back to the 17th century but was heavily damaged by the 2015 earthquake. Despite the scaffolding, pilgrims continue to visit in large numbers. Visitors often sacrifice a goat or chicken in a pavilion behind the temple, with goats even receiving a discounted one-way ticket up on the cable car! This can create quite a scene on feast days. Rest assured, there is no tradition of sacrificing foreign tourists.
Entrance Fee: USD 20 (two-way cable car price)
Bandipur - Bandipur is one of Nepal’s most charming towns, a living museum of Newari culture, beautifully preserved on a lofty ridge. Its main street is lined with traditional row houses, and time seems to have stood still here, although much effort has gone into preserving its magic while developing the town as a destination. Derelict buildings have been transformed into cafes and lodges, and temples and civic buildings have been restored. With its attractive 18th-century architecture, pedestrian zone, and outdoor dining, it has a distinctly European feel.
Drive to Pokhara, Visit World Peace Pagoda
Pokhara - Pokhara offers spectacular scenery, adventure activities, and a wide range of accommodation and dining options. Whether returning from a three-week trek or a challenging bus trip, Lakeside Pokhara is the perfect place to recharge.
World Peace Pagoda - The Pokhara Shanti Stupa, or World Peace Pagoda, is a Buddhist pagoda-style monument on Anadu Hill of the former Pumdi Bhumdi Village Development Committee, in Kaski District, Nepal. Standing atop Anadu Hill, Shanti Stupa provides a panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Pokhara city, and Fewa Lake. It is an ideal holiday spot offering clear views of the Himalayan range, Fewa Lake, and Pokhara city. The hilltop provides a splendid view of sunrise and sunset. The pagoda is 7 kilometers from Mahendrapool, the major business hub in Pokhara.
Visit Sarangkot and Pokhara Sightseeing
Sarangkot - The view of the Annapurna Himalaya from Sarangkot (foreigner/Nepali Rs 50/20) is almost a spiritual experience. From here, you can see a panoramic sweep of Himalayan peaks, from Dhaulagiri (8167m) in the west to the perfect pyramid of Machhapuchhare (6997m), the tent-like peak of Annapurna II (7937m) to Lamjung (6983m) in the east. Most visitors come at dawn or dusk, when the sun illuminates the peaks, transforming them from a purple-pink to a celestial gold. If noisy teenagers disturb the peace at the viewing tower, try walking further along to the secluded grassy helicopter pad.
Davi’s Falls Pokhara - The waterfall is 500 meters long and 100 feet deep. Though it flows year-round, it is best viewed from June to September. Interestingly, the waterfall runs down some rocks before disappearing into an underground tunnel leading to Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave. The waterfall’s modern name is debated, officially known as Patale Chhango, but popularly called Davis Falls or Devis Falls due to a typographical error.
Entrance Fee: USD 0.5
Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave - Discovered in the 16th century, the main cave entrance was constructed in 1991. The cave contains two chambers with several shrines, the largest dedicated to Shiva. Although primarily a religious site, it is being developed as a tourist attraction. Continuing 40 meters down the cave, passing other small statues and shrines, you’ll reach the main Shiva temple, which has a strict no-photography rule. Beyond the temple, the second part of the cave is about 140 meters long, with colorful walls. Further along, a metal staircase leads downwards, where you’ll hear the waterfall ahead. After descending the staircase, you’ll walk across uneven rocky ground to reach an area with a view of the waterfall.
Entrance Fee: USD 2
Shree Bindhyabasini Temple - The white pagoda-style building of the Hindu Bindabasini Temple sits quietly at about 3000 feet above sea level along the renowned Annapurna and Machhpuchhare mountain ranges. Located near the bustling Old Bazaar of Pokhara, a center of commerce in the Himalayas, the Bindabasini Temple holds great religious importance for Hindus in the Pokhara region. It is a vital hub of religious fervor, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga, Pokhara’s chosen guardian deity. Durga, also known as Shakti or Kali, has numerous manifestations, and at the Bindabasini Temple, she is seen as Bhagwati, a fierce aspect of the goddess.
International Mountain Museum - Mountains and mountaineering have a rich history. Without preservation, records and evidence could be lost forever. The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), established on November 1, 1973, initiated the establishment of the International Mountain Museum (IMM) in Pokhara. The museum’s primary objective is to record, document, and chronicle the past and present development of mountaineering activities worldwide, particularly preserving the saga of momentous feats in the history of mountaineering in the Himalayan peaks.
Entrance Fee: USD 5
