Kathmandu Durbar Square - Also known as Basantapur Durbar, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Constructed during the Lichhavi period (4th century), it showcases the finest Nepalese art and architecture, including wood carvings and pagoda temples. Most of the current temples were built in the 17th century by King Pratap Malla. There are over 50 temples within the square. Key attractions include:
- The Taleju Temple, the tallest structure, was built by King Mahendra Malla in 1549 AD and is open to the public during the Dashain festival.
- The Kumari Temple, or the Temple of the Living Goddess, exemplifies advanced Nepali craftsmanship and serves as the official residence of the Living Goddess Kumari of Kathmandu.
- The Jagannath Temple is renowned for its intriguing erotic figures carved on wooden struts from the 17th century.
- The Kal Bhairav is the largest 17th-century stone statue in Kathmandu, depicting the fearsome aspect of Lord Shiva.
- Pashupatinath Temple - Pashupatinath, where Shiva is the supreme deity of the Hindus, is located on the banks of the Bagmati River. It features numerous temples, shrines, and ashrams. The pagoda-style temple is one of the largest Hindu temples. The Maha Shivaratri, Bala Chaturdasi, and Teej festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm here. Every evening at 6:30 pm, a light offering (Aarati) takes place on the riverbank.
- Boudhanath Stupa - Boudhanath is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s largest stupas. Situated in Kathmandu, it is the spiritual and cultural center of Nepal’s Tibetan community. Visitors can join pilgrims in a clockwise kora (circumambulation) around the dome, spin the ancient prayer wheels, and experience the timeless rituals that make this a truly captivating destination.
- Patan Durbar Square - Often called the jewel of Newar architecture, Patan Durbar Square is a captivating display of ancient artistry and craftsmanship. Located in the heart of Lalitpur (the “City of Beauty”), this historic complex is an expansive open museum where intricate woodcarvings, gilded metalwork, and exquisite stone temples coexist harmoniously. From the magnificent Krishna Mandir to the royal palace with its ornate windows, every corner of this UNESCO World Heritage Site narrates a tale of a golden age of creativity and devotion.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square - Bhaktapur Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest square in Kathmandu. It is a must-visit palace with its stunning temples, squares, art, and architecture. Most monuments were constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Malla dynasty. Major temples and squares include:
- Nyatapole Square, the tallest temple (108 ft) in Nepal, was built in the 17th century by King Bhupatindra Malla. It took three generations to complete. The main goddess of the temple is Siddhi Laxmi.
- The Golden Gate, described by English writer Percy Brown as the most beautiful and richly molded specimen of its kind in the world, is a 24-carat gold-polished door surrounded by Hindu gods and goddesses. Erected by King Ranjit Malla, it serves as the entrance to the main courtyard of the palace of fifty-five windows.
- The three-story Dattatreya Square Temple is one of the oldest monuments in Bhaktapur, built in 1486 AD by King Yaksha Malla.
- Changu Narayan - Changu Narayan Temple is a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site and a significant milestone in Nepali temple architecture. Located on a picturesque hilltop in Bhaktapur, this ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu houses the oldest stone inscription in the Kathmandu Valley, dating back to 464 AD. The temple courtyard is an open-air museum, featuring exquisitely carved sculptures from the Licchavi era, including the 7th-century image of Vishnu riding Garuda, so iconic it once adorned Nepal’s ten-rupee note.
