Kathmandu to Lukla (Flight) and Trek to Phakding
Phakding - The flight into Lukla (Tenzing Hillary Airport) is always thrilling. Flying into the high Himalayas is a rare experience!
After landing, porters organize the bags, and the journey begins! It’s about a 3-hour hike to Phakding, where the first night is spent. The day goes by quickly, but much more excitement awaits.
Day 3: Phakding to Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazaar - The trail meanders over the Dudh Koshi River via suspension bridges and through rhododendron forests. In spring, the flowers make it very colorful. Entering Sagarmatha National Park introduces travelers to fascinating wildlife and majestic mountains.
Namche Bazaar is renowned as the starting point for many treks and climbing expeditions. It has a lively atmosphere as trekkers, climbers, and staff prepare for the journey ahead. It’s a wonderful place to connect with like-minded individuals over a cup of tea or a beer.
Day 4: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazaar - At this altitude, it’s important to acclimate. Interestingly, staying active is the best way to do so. There are several options to achieve this, such as visiting the Everest View Hotel for coffee and stunning views of Mt. Everest.
Travelers can also visit Khumjung village, made famous by Edmund Hillary, who established the Khunde Hospital and Khumjung School. Some may be interested in Khumjung Monastery, the center of Sherpa religion and culture. It’s also a good time to purchase supplies for the trek.
Day 5: Namche Bazaar to Dole
Dole - The hike up the Dudh Koshi Valley is beautiful, with Thamserku, Everest, and Ama Dablam towering above. The region is predominantly Buddhist, with stupas and prayer flags along the way. From a ridge near Mong village, there are views of the Tengboche monastery.
The rhododendron and pine forests, along with waterfalls, are stunning. However, the stone stairs on the trail are less enjoyable.
Day 6: Dole to Machhermo
Machhermo - The short climb from Dole leads to more gentle but still uphill trails, with the Dudh Koshi River below and breathtaking views of Thamserku from a ridge above the destination village. The trekker finds their stride and enjoys even the rougher sections.
Day 7: Machhermo to Gokyo (Afternoon hike to Gokyo, RI)
Gokyo to Machhermo (Morning hike to Gokyo 4th Lake)
Machhermo - This short day begins with a pre-breakfast hike to the fourth Gokyo Lake along a flat trail. After this brief walk, there is ample time to enjoy the beautiful lake before returning to Gokyo for breakfast. Then, it’s a short hike to the next overnight stop.
Day 9: Machhermo to Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazaar - Leaving the tranquil villages and landscapes for the bustling Namche Bazaar is quite a change. However, engaging with other trekkers makes the lively atmosphere enjoyable.
Day 10: Namche Bazaar to Lukla
Lukla - The trail along the Dudh Koshi River is repeated, crossing the same suspension bridges to reach Lukla, where trekkers stay overnight, awaiting flights back to Kathmandu early the next morning.
