Karakoram Highway - Following breakfast, the journey begins along the Karakoram Highway, renowned as one of the ten most perilous highways globally due to its high altitude and challenging conditions, yet also celebrated for its breathtaking views of the Pamir Plateau. After approximately 50 kilometers, there is a stop at Upal Village. Here, travelers can purchase fresh fruits, nang (a type of local bread), and other provisions for the trip. Additionally, sampling local snacks like baked buns and experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of the village market is encouraged.
The journey continues to the Oytagh Red Mountain, where a stop is made to capture photographs, allowing travelers to appreciate the awe-inspiring power of nature and the majesty of the Kunlun Mountains.
Bulungkol - The drive proceeds to White Sand Lake (Baisha Lake), where the water is clear and blue, contrasting with the snow-white sand dunes to create a unique landscape. A walk along the lakeside offers the chance to enjoy the stunning views of the lake and mountains, with ample opportunities for photography.
Karakul Lake - The next destination is Karakul Lake, situated 3600 meters above sea level. The lake is nestled at the base of the renowned Muztagh Ata (7546m) and Gongur (7719m) mountains. ‘Muztagh Ata’ translates to Father of the Ice Mountain and is considered one of the most beautiful and enigmatic mountains worldwide.
Visitors can relax by the lake, admiring the magnificent reflections of Muztagh Ata and the nine peaks of the Kongur Mountains. Lunch is available at a lakeside restaurant, after which the journey continues to Taghrma Wetland, the largest wetland in Tashkurgan, known for its lush grass and herds of sheep and cattle. Upon arrival in Tashkurgan, guests can check into their hotel and later savor local delicacies in the town, such as yak hot pot and plateau mutton. An early rest is recommended to acclimate to the high-altitude environment.
Tashkorgan - Muztagh Ata Glacier Park - Kashgar
Tashkurgan Fort - After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, there is an opportunity to visit the town’s ancient Stone Fort, which has stood for 2200 years. ‘Tashkurgan’ translates to ‘Stone Fort.’ Many scholars believe this ancient stone castle was referenced in Ptolemy’s geographical guide in the 2nd century BC.
Following this, a hike around the golden grassland beside the stone castle is available. After lunch in Tashkorgan, the drive to Kashgar commences. Along the route, there is an option to visit Muztagh Ata Glacier Park and experience the glacier firsthand.
