- Sorabora Lake - The tour begins from your hotel in Kandy at 6:00 am. Your chauffeur guide will pick you up and take you on a drive along the renowned 18 Bend Road to Mahiyangana. Known for being one of the most thrilling and spectacular roads globally, recent renovations have made it safer, yet it still offers breathtaking views over the Mahiyangana valley.
The next destination is of significant archaeological value within the valley. Sorabora Wewa, also known as the Sea of Bintenna, is an ancient reservoir believed to have been constructed over two millennia ago during King Dutugemunu’s era. Created by damming Diyawanna Oya with a 485m embankment, the reservoir utilizes the surrounding natural rock to form a channel that acts as a sluice gate. You can observe this unique sluice gate while walking along the embankment.
- Ulhitiya Reservoir - The next stop is Ulhitiya Reservoir, a crucial reservoir in the area, formed by damming Ulhitiya Oya, a tributary of the Mahaweli River. After learning about the reservoir’s history, the journey continues to Mahiyangana, reaching this historic city by 10:30 am.
- Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya - This site is believed to be where Lord Buddha first visited Sri Lanka. The Mahiyangana Temple began as a small stupa enshrining a few strands of Buddha’s hair and was the island’s first stupa. In 543 BC, an Arahant named Sarabhu brought Buddha’s left collar bone from his funeral pyre and enshrined it alongside his hair, enlarging the stupa to 18 feet. Subsequent kings expanded the stupa to its current size. The temple was renovated about four decades ago and remains a peaceful and historic site. You will visit this temple and learn more about it.
- Veddha Village - At 12:30 pm, the hike to the Dambana Veddah village begins. Here, you will meet the indigenous community and see their rustic homes and lifestyles. These tribes primarily sustain themselves through hunting, with some farming. The tribe’s hunters will demonstrate their innovative methods for catching prey such as rabbits, deer, and wild boar from the surrounding forests. You may have the opportunity to join them on a short hunt and try out their traditional longbows and arrows. At 3:30 pm, you will leave the village and return to Mahiyangana, where you can choose to have lunch at a local restaurant at your own expense.
The tour concludes with a return to your hotel in Kandy by 6:00 pm.
