- Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The Temple of the Sacred Tooth, with its golden roof, houses a tooth of the Buddha, the most sacred relic of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. The room where the tooth is kept is opened to devotees and tourists during puja (offerings or prayers), although the tooth itself is not visible. The tooth is stored in a gold casket resembling a dagoba (stupa) with six smaller dagoba caskets nested inside. In addition to the main temple, which is highly revered, the complex includes smaller temples, shrines, and a set of museums.
- Kandy Lake - Kandy Lake is undoubtedly the heart of the town. Despite the presence of noisy diesel buses that circle the southern tip of the lake, they do not deter leisurely walks around the lakeside. The area near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the most pleasant for a stroll.
- Udawattakele Forest Park - Often referred to as Udawatta Kele, Udawattakele Forest Reserve is an ancient forested hill ridge located in Kandy City, covering 104 hectares (257 acres). During the Kandyan kingdom era, it was known in Sinhalese as “Uda Wasala Watta,” meaning “the garden above the royal palace.” The sanctuary is renowned for its bird diversity and rich plant biodiversity, especially lianas, shrubs, and small trees. There are numerous large lianas, and a variety of medium and small mammals common to Sri Lanka can be observed here. Some species of snakes and other reptiles are also present. Udawattakele was designated a forest reserve in 1856 and became a sanctuary in 1938.
- Bahirawakanada Temple - Situated near Kandy city, on a hill, is the magnificent Buddha statue constructed in 1972. It is two kilometers from the Temple of the Tooth Relic, next to the Sri Maha Bodhi Temple at the top of Bahirawa Kanda hill. The white sculpture depicts Buddha in the Niddhi posture and is visible from almost every part of Kandy city. This 88-foot-tall statue is among the tallest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka.
- Royal Botanical Gardens - Once exclusive to the Kandyan royal family, these splendid gardens are now open to both locals and tourists. They are the largest botanical gardens in Sri Lanka, spanning over 60 hectares. Among its many attractions are a magnificent collection of orchids, an impressive avenue of royal palms, the unique cannonball fruit tree, the towering 40-meter-tall Burma bamboo, and many other remarkable plants. Another breathtaking attraction in Peradeniya is the giant Javan fig tree on the great lawn, known for its massive central trunk and umbrella-shaped branch canopy. Peradeniya is located west of Kandy, about 6 kilometers from the city center.
