- Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is the final resting place of the Sacred Tooth (Left Canine) of the Buddha. This relic was brought to Sri Lanka during the reign of King Kirtisri Megahavanna (301-328) by Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala from the kingdom of Kalinga, India. It became a symbol of sovereignty for the Sri Lankan kings and was carefully preserved in a special shrine within the royal palace, regardless of the capital’s location. Remnants of these structures can be found in the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, Kotte, and Gampola. In Kandy, the last capital, the Sacred Tooth Relic Temple remains the most revered shrine in the Buddhist world.
- Peradeniya - PERADENIYA BOTANICAL GARDEN
As the largest garden in Sri Lanka, the elegant and expansive 147-acre (60-hectare) Peradeniya Botanical Garden requires ample time to explore its impressive Avenue of Royal Palms.
Peradeniya Gardens boasts around 4,000 different plant species. The approximately 10,000 trees, many of which are towering tropical timber trees, are the main attraction. Highlights include the Giant Bamboo of Burma, which can grow up to 40 meters (130 feet) tall with a stem diameter of 25 centimeters (10 inches), and can grow 30 centimeters (12 inches) per day.
The century-old giant Javan fig tree is truly remarkable, with its tentacle-like roots spreading over an area of about 1,800 square meters (19,375 square feet) beneath its vast canopy.
The Cannonball tree is also fascinating, with its cannonball-shaped fruit hanging from the trunk and large, open, waxy pink-white flowers.
- Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue - Tourists are most familiar with the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya temple, located on the hill of Bahirawakanda. It is renowned for its enormous Buddha statue, visible from any point in Kandy. The statue depicts Lord Buddha in Nirvana, representing his first Enlightenment. Constructed in 1972, it is Sri Lanka’s tallest Buddha statue, standing over 25 meters high. The Temple of the Tooth Relic is just 2 km away. Visitors are requested to remove their hats and shoes. Offerings of flowers or oil lamps can be made at the temple. A staircase leads to the Buddha statue, from where visitors can ascend further to enjoy the surrounding views. At night, Kandy is illuminated by thousands of twinkling lights, resembling the night sky.
