It was established in 1542 by two priests and named after the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since then, Panagia Tourliani has been the island’s patron and is celebrated on August 15th.

It is now displayed in the courtyard of the Sea Maritime Museum, housed in a traditional 19th-century Cycladic building in Mykonos Town, at Tria Pigadia. The lighthouse was built following the sinking of the English steamer VOLTA in 1887 on Mykonos’ north coast, where 11 crew members perished. The lighthouse is located in Fanari, a hill formerly known as Vourvoulakas, meaning Vampire.
