- The Great Mosque of Kairouan - Established in 670 and reconstructed in 836, the Great Mosque of Kairouan is the first mosque in the Maghreb. It served as a prototype for other mosques in the Muslim West, extending to Andalusia. Named after the Arab conqueror Oqba, who founded the city, the mosque’s minaret resembles ancient lighthouses, like the renowned lighthouse of Alexandria. Standing at 31.50 meters, it overlooks a vast courtyard encircled by arcades. The prayer hall is filled with a forest of columns, framing the grand central aisle, many of which were sourced from ancient sites such as Sbeïtla. The portico surrounding the courtyard, the prayer hall, and the harmonious symmetry of the facade with its arched arches and dome make this mosque an architectural masterpiece.
- Medina of Kairouan - Explore the Aghlabid medieval medina and immerse yourself in the history of the Middle Ages. Visit the Three Door Mosque with its charming minarets, then head to the souks, the medina’s marketplace, where you can browse the stalls, savor Kairouan’s pastries “The Mekroudhs,” and discover its traditional carpet craftsmanship.
