Amazing day trip - Amazing day trip with my private guide Imam, with whom I discovered beautiful places and who told me many local stories and legends. I was pampered during this day when I could visit and better understand the history of several monuments and enjoy exceptional landscapes! Imam also showed me places outside the stops planned in the tour, which is undeniably a plus! I absolutely recommend!

Amazing Tour Guide Experience w Atok! - Our tour guide, Atok, was great! Friendly, helpful, a lot of fun to be around and able to give us a more local experience to things like foods and best spots to take pictures at the temples. The temple and volcano guides were also great! Will always recommend!

Simply breathtaking! - What an awesome experience! I have not had such an amazing day since I visited Angkor Wat! To be able to visit both temple complexes in one day was breathtaking and, had I been here longer, would seriously consider returning to do sunrise again (in hope of slightly less cloud) and Prambanan to see it in the morning. The specialist guides at both places were great, however the 1:1 guide at Prambanan was especially knowledgeable and interesting. Unfortunately, I didn’t go to the Merapi crater due to the cloud, but I did get a jeep river experience instead. I cannot thank my driver, Wahyu, enough! He was kind, thoughtful and considerate and really let me take in the sights at my own pace.

Best tour(guide) - We were picked up by Ipung, just before 4am. Only one more guest had to join, so we were a small group of 4 people doing the tour. Ipung was very knowledgeable about anything we asked her. The timing of the sunrise was perfect, we did not have to wait long for the first light to appear on the other side of the Merapi valcano. Next highlight was the Borobudur. A pitty that you are limited in time, but of course not the fault of Ipung. After a great lunch at Van Bloemen restaurant, a recommendation especially for Dutch guests:-) we continued to Prambanan temple where Ipung again showed her knowledge. Impressive! Above that Ipung is very ammaible and friendly. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to do this tour.

Lovely tour for the day - I enjoyed my tour of Borobudur and Prambanan temples along with Mount Merapi jeep tour and Sunrise from Setumbu hills. I was taken by my guide to Setumbu hills at 4 am. They don’t go up with you so I was a little scared being alone walking up. However it was very safe. When I reached up I found three other people. I waited for the sunrise unfortunately it being rainy season, it was quite cloudy, but I managed to get a couple of good photographs. It was fun being out early in the morning and enjoyed the cool weather. . The path going up and down was surrounded by forest..so nice and green and on the way back I was able to get some tofu and banana fritters for breakfast. Next we went to Borobudur. This was a nice complex again being a Monday. I could not go right to the top, but I enjoyed seeing the beautiful structure. After that I went to Mount Merapi on the jeep. That was a lot of fun and my guide was really nice. We finished the tour by seeing Prambanan temples. At the end, my guide very kindly took me to a local restaurant which I really enjoyed.

Nice guide but an exhausting day with too much driving. - Our guide was Yumi and he was great - excellent at english and very accommodating. The day didn’t really go as we expected though, for these reasons (lack of research perhaps!) First thing to know - this trip depends on good weather to get the most out of it. If it’s cloudy then you won’t see a great sunrise (so getting up for a 0400 pick up feels pointless) and you won’t be able to see Merapi on the jeep tour. Second thing - the temple viewpoint is a long way from the temple, not in the temple compound. You have to buy a specific ticket via a hotel in the temple complex to be inside at 0600, otherwise you won’t get into the grounds until 0900. Can be very hot by then and you’ve already been awake for 5 1/2 hours. Third - the jeep tour is pretty lame. You won’t get within 7km of the summit and on the way up you’ll stop at a couple of low quality educational sites with some photos and artefacts of the eruptions. Some cool US Army jeeps though and due to the low cloud base they aborted the furthest viewpoint and drove us along a river for a bit of fun instead. Fourth - there’s a LOT of driving, in a new but fairly uncomfortable minibus. 1 hr to the sunrise spot, 45 mins from there to the temple complex, 1hr+ to the Jeep tour, 30 mins to the second temple complex, 45 mins back to the city. You’ll leave your hotel at 0400 and won’t be back till 1700, possibly later. Take something to rest your head on in the minibus so you can doze, some snacks and water, and wear cool clothing. I don’t know how price would compare but hiring your own driver and just visiting these sites independently would be better - just watch them taking a high commission on your entry passes and restaurant stops - but that way you can make a call on the weather, monitor your energy levels and tailor the time you spend at each site to your needs. You get guides to the temples included in entrance passes so all you need is a savvy driver. Only plan to get up for the sunrise if you know the sky will be clear - it’s a long tiring day - if it will, pay the extra to get into the temple complex for sunrise and definitely go somewhere else if you want to get up to the summit of a volcano. If I had to choose one of the two temples to visit, I’d go to Prambanan - not so far out of the city, you can take your time wandering around the huge grounds (lots of shade) or hire a bike or scooter, and grab some food from one of the nice restaurants on site.
