Excellent guide, weather is unpredictable - My guide Atok was outstanding! He made the day go smoothly even though the weather did not. He made sure I had ample time for naps in between sites given our 3am departure. There were clouds at Borobudur so not much sunrise visible, but still a great option to get moody atmospheric photos in the twilight and to climb when it is not yet hot. Great breakfast and leisurely time. Mt Merapi was also hidden by clouds but we saw the local sites. Kind of a weird place - a solemn museum and then an amusement park and people taking cheeky photos at a place where people died in the eruption. At Prambanan, Atok guided me around the main temple and took several great photos and videos. The sun was finally out and the rocks are so hot it feels like a furnace. He let me explore on my own after that and the eventual rain was a relief. Don’t miss Sewu at the far end of the complex - it is very cool. Word of caution - if you don’t catch the shuttle at the start they won’t let you ride it on the way back. Just be prepared because the walk back definitely feels longer. Got back to the hotel around 3pm. Very long day but well worth it!

Everything as scheduled - Positive experience, our guide Haidar was very good and courteous. After dawn we were ahead of schedule and he accompanied us to see the chicken church, which was not scheduled. Long and tiring day, but it deserves 😄

Full day of adventure - A long day, especially with 2 kids (11 and 6) but so worth it. The sunrise experience was great even though we couldn't see much with the clouds, just being there, seing the sun rise and hearing the jungle around waking up was great. Borobudur temple is a MUST see if you are in the area. The Merapi jeep experience is very fun. Again we did not see the volcano because of the clouds but the ride itself is the experience really.

Interesting tour in Yogyakarta - Very well organized tour to the beautiful temples of Borobudur and Pranbanan which, if you visit the city, you absolutely cannot miss! Our guide Fery was very good and helpful. He fulfilled all our requests by cutting out the tour according to our needs. It was very interesting to talk to him, with great English he introduced us to the culture and traditions of Yogja. Thank you Fery!!

Fun! - It was a very varied and fun experience! I had already done most of these activities before, but I felt like this time I learned a lot more about the history and legends than before. The itinerary also gave space to breathe, with the jeep tour between the two temples. Our guide was very helpful and knowledgeable and it really felt like it was my uncle driving us around, trying to get us the best experience!

A nice 12+ hour tour - Great tour guide. You can tell him to make custom stops to see local markets, get snacks, etc. Bring cash to tip him at the end of the day. Excellent experience at Borobudur The jeep ride should be an option. Our jeep was so old it barely worked and had holes through the floor that I could see the road - and safety handles were broken. The lava park was a waste of time - just a dusty field with rocks. The eruption museum was interesting. You should tell customers that the climb to the sunrise location requires a lot of exertion. Not suitable for elderly or disabled.

Overall pretty good! - We enjoyed this trip, both temples speak for themselves, really stunning. The weather was poor when we went so we didn't really see much of a sunrise (even if we had, I don't think the view would've been that good either) and we couldn't see the volcano from the jeeps. Our jeeps driver took a detour to the river instead which was great fun. The only real issue for this tour was the waiting around at the first temple. We arrived at 7am, we couldn't register for a guide until 8am and then werent allowed in until 9, wasted alot of time .

Nice guide but an exhausting day with too much driving. - Our guide was Yumi and he was great - excellent at english and very accommodating. The day didn’t really go as we expected though, for these reasons (lack of research perhaps!) First thing to know - this trip depends on good weather to get the most out of it. If it’s cloudy then you won’t see a great sunrise (so getting up for a 0400 pick up feels pointless) and you won’t be able to see Merapi on the jeep tour. Second thing - the temple viewpoint is a long way from the temple, not in the temple compound. You have to buy a specific ticket via a hotel in the temple complex to be inside at 0600, otherwise you won’t get into the grounds until 0900. Can be very hot by then and you’ve already been awake for 5 1/2 hours. Third - the jeep tour is pretty lame. You won’t get within 7km of the summit and on the way up you’ll stop at a couple of low quality educational sites with some photos and artefacts of the eruptions. Some cool US Army jeeps though and due to the low cloud base they aborted the furthest viewpoint and drove us along a river for a bit of fun instead. Fourth - there’s a LOT of driving, in a new but fairly uncomfortable minibus. 1 hr to the sunrise spot, 45 mins from there to the temple complex, 1hr+ to the Jeep tour, 30 mins to the second temple complex, 45 mins back to the city. You’ll leave your hotel at 0400 and won’t be back till 1700, possibly later. Take something to rest your head on in the minibus so you can doze, some snacks and water, and wear cool clothing. I don’t know how price would compare but hiring your own driver and just visiting these sites independently would be better - just watch them taking a high commission on your entry passes and restaurant stops - but that way you can make a call on the weather, monitor your energy levels and tailor the time you spend at each site to your needs. You get guides to the temples included in entrance passes so all you need is a savvy driver. Only plan to get up for the sunrise if you know the sky will be clear - it’s a long tiring day - if it will, pay the extra to get into the temple complex for sunrise and definitely go somewhere else if you want to get up to the summit of a volcano. If I had to choose one of the two temples to visit, I’d go to Prambanan - not so far out of the city, you can take your time wandering around the huge grounds (lots of shade) or hire a bike or scooter, and grab some food from one of the nice restaurants on site.
