The Cullinan Diamond Mine is celebrated for its production of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, and is recognized as the world’s leading source of extremely rare blue diamonds. The mine gained historical significance with the 1905 discovery of the Cullinan diamond, the largest rough gem diamond ever found, weighing 3,106 carats. This diamond was cut to create the two most significant diamonds in the British Crown Jewels. Many of the world’s most renowned diamonds originate from Cullinan, and it continues to yield exceptional diamonds under Petra’s management. The Cullinan orebody holds a substantial diamond resource of 195 million carats, indicating a potential operational lifespan of over 50 years.

The Cullinan kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1902, and open-pit mining began at the ‘Premier’ mine (as it was initially called) in 1903. Since 1946, ore extraction has been conducted using underground mining methods. The annual ore extraction has ranged from 2 to 5 million tonnes, with ore treatment varying between 2 and 7 million tonnes per year. The mine was renamed ‘Cullinan’ during its centenary celebrations to honor its prestigious legacy, particularly the Cullinan diamond, which produced the two primary polished diamonds in the British Crown Jewels (the 530-carat Great Star of Africa and the 317-carat Lesser Star of Africa).
