- Apartheid Museum - At the Apartheid Museum, visitors can reflect on life during apartheid and the transition to a multi-racial democracy in the new South Africa. The exhibitions provide a detailed account of the segregation and minority rule imposed on black Africans by whites, from petty apartheid, such as being barred from sharing entrances, swimming pools, bathrooms, and transport, to severe forms like land dispossession, deprivation of quality education, denial of economic opportunities, and the right to vote. Among the 22 exhibitions is the popular Nelson Mandela life map, marking the end of apartheid and the transition to a multi-racial democracy, earning South Africa the nickname “The Rainbow Nation.”
- FNB Stadium - Visitors will stop at the FNB Stadium, the largest in South Africa with a capacity of over 94,000, and host of the 2010 Soccer World Cup games. Built from 1987-1989, the stadium is also famous for being the site of Nelson Mandela’s first public speech after his release from prison.
- Orlando Towers - Visitors can see the twin towers, which served as a coal-powered power station for over 50 years before being decommissioned and transformed into an entertainment and business center. Activities like bungee and BASE jumping from a platform between the towers are available for visitors to enjoy at their own expense.
- Kliptown Golfcourse Estate Flats Joshco - Here, visitors will witness how one of South Africa’s poorest communities unites to educate, equip, and feed about 500 to 600 children daily. The Kliptown community lacks basic amenities like schools, tap water, and sewer systems. The Kliptown Youth Program assists children with schoolwork, provides meals, sporting facilities, and enrolls them in arts and culture programs.
- Vilakazi Street Tourism - On Vilakazi Street, visitors have the unique opportunity to walk on the only street in the world that was home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Visitors can tour Nelson Mandela’s former house, now a museum showcasing his life and struggle to end apartheid, followed by a local cuisine lunch at a restaurant known for its Soweto-themed buffet.
- Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial - Named in honor of Hector Pieterson, a student shot and killed along with 170 others during the Soweto Uprising, the museum offers insights into the June 16, 1976 protest. Black African students protested against human rights abuses, including the imposition of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in all schools. The exhibits, featuring films, personal accounts, newspapers, and photographs, include the famous image of Hector Pieterson being carried after being shot, which gained worldwide recognition.
