This road offers numerous scenic views, and from the top observatory, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley, Hakone, and Fuji. Even on rainy days, the fog and greenery create an incredible atmosphere.
• Hakone Shrine - Located on the shores of Lake Ashii, the Hakone Shrine is a Japanese Shinto shrine established in 757. It features a Tori (red gate), several shrines and buildings, souvenir shops, and a museum. Nestled in nature, it is one of the most beautiful shrines in the region.
• Lake Ashinoko - Next, we will visit Lake Ashi, stopping at several renowned Torii Gates (traditional Japanese gates typically found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine) and Shrines.
• Amasake Tea House - Our journey continues to Amazake Chaya, a traditional teahouse along the historic Tōkaidō road. Tucked away in the cedar forests of Hakone, it has been welcoming travelers for over 400 years. Inside, the wooden beams, darkened by centuries of hearth smoke, create a warm and historical ambiance. Here, you can savor amazake, a sweet, non-alcoholic rice drink once offered to weary pilgrims, along with simple local snacks. It is more than just a teahouse; it is a living remnant of Edo-period travel culture, where the spirit of hospitality is carefully preserved.
• Tenzan Tohji-kyo - After exploring the highway, scenic road, shrine, and lake, it’s time to eat and relax. We will leisurely head to some of the most beautiful onsens that Kanto has to offer (with several options depending on your mood and preferences). Here, you can enjoy local specialties, unwind in the thermal waters, and even indulge in a massage. Napping by the water in the relaxation room is also possible and highly recommended.
• The Hakone Open-Air Museum - Following lunch and relaxation at the onsen, we will hit the road again to visit the open-air museum. It houses collections of artworks by Picasso, Henry Moore, Taro Okamoto, Yasuo Mizui, Churyo Sato, Susumu Shingū, and many others, featuring over a thousand sculptures displayed within 70,000 square meters of lush garden. It is both captivating and soothing for adults and children alike.
• Pola Museum of Art - If the weather is unfavorable, or if time allows, or if you are interested in both, we will visit the Pola Museum, which is indoors. Nestled in a forest of beech trees and hidden in the wooded mountains of Hakone, the award-winning modern architecture beautifully contrasts and harmonizes with the surrounding nature. The museum showcases a world-class collection of Western and Japanese paintings, ceramics, and cosmetic utensils, with a focus on impressionist paintings.
• Lake Ashinoko Sky Line - After lunch, if time permits, we will travel along a second iconic road in the Fuji/Hakone region. This route offers an even closer view of Fuji, Lake Ashinoko, and even the sea! There are four breathtaking panoramas along the road, and we will stop at each one.
