Appleton Estate, a historic sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica, has been expertly crafting rums since 1749. They offer a diverse range of aged rums, along with classic gold and white rums. Situated in the heart of Jamaica’s sugar cane region, it stands as the oldest sugar estate and distillery in the country. The estate’s sugar cane is harvested both by machine and traditionally by workers using machetes.
Visiting this plantation is like stepping back in time, witnessing the traditional methods of milling cane for juice and producing rum and sugar, alongside modern techniques. Guests can watch a 10-minute video showcasing the entire process before starting the tour. Visitors can sample all the sugar cane by-products, including juice, molasses, wet sugar, and various rum flavors, which many find to be the highlight of their visit. The estate tour lasts approximately 2 hours.
This is perhaps the only river where friendly crocodiles can be found! Enjoy a tour on a comfortable open-air safari motorboat along Jamaica’s longest navigable river, through the country’s largest wetland area, the Black River lower morass. An experienced and knowledgeable captain/guide shares insights into the ecology and history. Observe over 100 bird species recorded in the morass, meet “friendly” crocodiles as the captain calls them by name, and watch them swim up to the boat, where you can pet and feed them. Discover the wetland vegetation, various mangrove species, thatch palms, and more.
