- Ggantija Archaeological Park - The tour begins with a visit to the megalithic temples of Ġgantija, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. This remarkable archaeological site dates back to around 3600-2500 BC. Alongside Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples and Skorba Temples in Malta, Ġgantija is considered the second oldest free-standing monument on Earth, only surpassed by Göbekli Tepe in Turkey, and predating Stonehenge in England and the Pyramids of Egypt by about 1000 years! The name “Ġgantija” comes from the Maltese word for giant (“Ġgant”), as it was believed that giants constructed the site. This myth is understandable given that the temples are built from massive limestone blocks, some over five meters long and weighing more than 50 tons.
- Victoria - Following the visit to Ġgantija, the tour continues to Victoria, the charming capital city of Gozo. Victoria is not only the geographic center of Gozo but also the hub of daily life. It blends the hustle and bustle of its market and shops with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It’s an excellent spot to observe the islanders in their daily routines, especially when the main market square is bustling with activity.
- The Citadel - At the city’s core is another magnificent site: the medieval fortress known locally as “Iċ-Ċittadella” (The Citadel). With its unique skyline and formidable military architecture, this ancient fortified structure is Gozo’s major landmark, visible from across the island.
The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the site now occupied by The Citadel is thought to have been the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos, or Glauconis Civitas. During the medieval period, the acropolis was transformed into a castle, serving as a refuge for Gozo’s inhabitants. By the 15th century, a suburb began to develop outside its walls, forming the historic core of Victoria today.
- Xlendi Bay - The next stop is the charming sea inlet known as Xlendi Bay, located at the end of a deep, verdant ravine, once a riverbed, and surrounded by scenic steep cliffs. The bay is a must-visit for many day-trippers to the island. Xlendi’s small yet vibrant promenade is lively throughout the day, featuring various cafes, restaurants, and a few souvenir shops. Despite its summer activity, Xlendi Bay remains a peaceful retreat even during peak season.
- Dwejra Bay - The final stop is at Dwejra, located on Gozo’s western shore, a geological and ecological treasure. The area is a mix of geology, landscape, fauna, habitats, shoreline, seascapes, archaeology, flora, and history, making a visit here truly memorable.
Dwejra is also famous for its Inland Sea, a small bay encircled by high cliffs and connected to the open sea by an impressive 65-meter-long natural tunnel, a captivating natural formation that inspires awe. Weather permitting, there is an opportunity to take a short boat trip through the narrow tunnel and its surroundings, available for a small fee payable on-site (the boat trip is not included in your package price).
