Tip: The concept of constructing a canal through the Isthmus of Corinth was first envisioned by the tyrant Periander in the 6th century BC.
- The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus - Named after Epidauros, son of Apollo, Epidaurus has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The archaeological site includes the ancient theatre, built at the end of the 4th century BC for religious ceremonies honoring the god Asclepius. It is renowned worldwide for its symmetry and acoustics, with an impressive capacity of 12,000 seats, each inscribed with the names of donors.
Visitors can also explore the famous sanctuary of Asclepius, a destination for those seeking healing from across Greece. Asclepius, a mythical hero-doctor and son of Apollo, learned medicine from the centaur Chiron. The Doric temple of Asclepius housed an ivory and gold statue of the god. Behind the Asclepion is the Tholos, a circular building with exquisite carved decorations. Beneath the Tholos floor was a labyrinth where the sacred snakes of Asclepius resided.
Additionally, visitors will find a large altar for sacrifices, the Sacred Well with therapeutic water, the Stadium, the Odeon, the Propylon, the Katagogeion Hotel (a hostelry with 160 rooms), and the Enkoimeterion (a dormitory where a well filled with inscribed tablets describing miraculous cures was discovered).
Near the archaeological site of Epidaurus is the Acropolis, where a small theatre with a capacity of 2,000 seats was discovered. It was built in the 4th century BC in honor of the god Dionysus.
Be sure to visit the archaeological museum of Epidaurus, which houses exhibits including entablatures from the temples of Asclepius and Artemis, and the statue of the god Asclepius.
- Archaeological Site Mycenae - Known as the kingdom of Agamemnon, Mycenae is located in the Argolis region between the hills of Profitis Ilias and Sana. It has influenced European art and literature for over a thousand years and was a major center of Greek civilization.
The ancient city was encircled by massive Cyclopean walls, with the Lion Gate being the most famous feature. This gate served as the town’s entrance, adorned with two female lions above.
The site also includes the tomb of the House of Atreus, the Palace, the cemetery, and the acropolis.
Don’t miss the archaeological museum of Mycenae, which showcases numerous golden artifacts, including the death mask of Atreus.
- Pyramid of Elliniko - Also known as the Pyramid of Kechraie, this structure is located at the southeastern edge of Argolida near the Erasinos River. Constructed at the end of the 4th century BC, it is believed to have served as a burial monument or a small fort for a guard.
Admission to the site is free and it is always open to the public.
- Fortress of Palamidi - Known as one of Greece’s most beautiful towns and the most romantic city, it was the first capital of the newly established Greek state after the Revolution of 1821.
According to myth, Nafplion was founded by Nafplios, son of the god Poseidon.
