An absolute must if you want to get the most from a city break to Istanbul. - Our knowledgeable and friendly guide, Ozan, met us at our hotel for the start of our 1-day private guided Istanbul tour. We travelled by taxi to the Hippodrome area and were expertly guided around the main sites, including the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar. During our day we also stopped for lunch at a very interesting restaurant that we would not have known about without Ozan recommending it. Ozan was able to adapt to our needs and interests perfectly. It felt like a day out with a friend, at the end of which we knew so much more about Istanbul's incredible history and also how to get around the city. Doing the tour on our first full day in Istanbul gave us the local knowledge and information to make the most of the rest of our time there. Would highly recommend this tour.

Great Tour - Kemal was a great tour guide. Traveling with my elderly mother, so he kept a good pace while maximizing our time. Very knowledgable. We started at the Hippodrome and Blue Mosque, hit the local museum, Hagia Sophia, lunch, and then the Grand Bazaar. Was able to tailor out trip because we visited other sites on our own the day prior. Went in January, so limited crowds. Per Kemal, high season is extremely busy.

Superb local guide - Ok - I don’t write many posts on Tripadvisor. In fact I only remember writing one before. Your time in Istanbul is going to be amazing anyway, but if you want it to come to life, then ask for Numan Tasdogan to be your guide. Numan is a lovely man - he is very proud to explain the historical setting of all the major sights. He took us to a superb local lunch spot. He helped us with restaurant recommendations. He is just a humble and a proud man (I struggle to give higher praise) and it is a pleasure to spend time with him.

2 day tour of Istanbul - Our guide, Volkan, was fantastic. He made sure that we visited all the “must see” attractions in Istanbul while offering us the flexibility to visit additional places that were on our wish list. At each place we visited, he provided excellent historical background and also insight into the people and society associated with each place. The information he passed on to us gave us a much clearer understanding of where we were and what we were looking at. Throughout the two days, he was very patient with us and saw to our every need. In addition, on our request, he advised us about other places he thought we might like, as well as giving us advice on how to maneuver thru the city, and even recommending places to eat. In summary, he made our 2 day tour a wonderful, informative experience!

Disappointing Private Tour Experience in Istanbul (from Boston, USA) - We recently traveled from Boston, USA, to Turkey and booked a 3-day private tour of Istanbul (name: "Best of Istanbul: 1, 2 or 3-Day Private Guided Istanbul Tour"), inspired by many positive reviews that set high expectations. Unfortunately, our experience fell short, leaving us disappointed and feeling that we didn't get our money's worth. Here are a few positives about the tour: The booking process was smooth, and the agency ("Guided Istanbul Tours") provided plenty of details upfront. Our interactions with them were generally quick and efficient. Our guide, Ulku, managed the logistics well, helping us skip long lines and visit many landmarks quickly. She also shared useful tips, like the best places to exchange currency and took us to a local restaurant known for its excellent pide, along with a few other similar hidden gems. However, our main issue was with Ulku's approach to the meat of it all - the tour itself. She seemed uninterested in making the tour memorable or in understanding our preferences. Her commentary at each site was minimal, offering only basic insights into Istanbul’s rich history. We expected more detailed stories but felt we received just the basics. Ulku often appeared distracted, spending much time on her phone. For instance, she didn't accompany us inside any exhibitions at Topkapi Palace (while we saw other tourists accompanied by their guides there), making the experience feel unguided. The tour was advertised as private and customizable, but when we tried to tailor it to our interests, we were told, "that's not in the itinerary". For example, when we asked to visit the Harem area of the Topkapi Palace, she refused, saying it wasn't included. Similarly, when we wanted to spend all of day 3 on the Asian side of Istanbul, she declined. This rigidity felt limiting, especially for a tour that promised flexibility, and contradicted previous assurances from the agency (that we could customize the tour as we wished). The tour days were also shorter than expected. Each day was supposed to be seven hours, but none reached this duration. The first day started at 9 AM and ended just after 2 PM; the second began after 10 AM and ended just after 3:30 PM; and the third started around 10:45 AM and concluded at 4 PM. This averaged about 5 hours a day, including lunch (as expected), far less than promised. When we asked her about this, she said we were quick at the sites (e.g. we snapped fewer pics than other tourists) so we were breezing by fast. We will let you form your own judgement on this for a tour that advertises itself as private, guided and flexible! Additionally, despite the booking's promise of daily hotel pick-up, we only received this service on the first day. For the remaining days, Ulku asked us to meet at various locations, which was inconvenient (e.g. due to us not being able to accurately identify the location to meet up and hence spending time looking for each other on the second day) and contrary to what was advertised. In contrast, we had booked another 1-day private guided tour in Cappadocia with a different company, and that guide, Gözde, was amazing and met all our expectations. This showed us that our expectations weren't unreasonable and that our experience in Istanbul wasn't typical for the region. In summary, while the booking process was smooth, the tour lacked depth, professionalism, and flexibility, leaving us feeling we overpaid for an underwhelming experience. We recommend seeking better tour agencies or tour guides or exploring Istanbul on your own, which may allow for a more customizable and cost-effective experience. For the former (seeking better tour agencies / guides), a lot more luck might be at play since most of these guides seem to be freelancers that are brought in by the agencies as and when needed, so we are not sure what one could do to ensure they get a guide that will make their experience a memorable one, or at least positive. Helpful Advice: Get an Istanbul card for public transit, a Museum Pass (either Istanbul-specific or Turkey-wide, depending on your itinerary), and some small bills for street food and short taxi rides. These will cover most of what you need to see the main sites, either on your own or with a guided tour (since most come without transportation included). For currency exchange, Ulku's recommendation of the Grand Bazaar's exchange places worked well for us. For ATM withdrawals, we found that PTT or ING Bank ATMs didn't charge fees for international debit cards.
