- Hippodrome - During the transition from Byzantium to the Ottoman Empire, master architects respected this square by preserving its historical works. Known as Horse Square during the Ottoman era, the Hippodrome witnessed festivals and parades.
The oval Hippodrome, which hosted many sports activities including chariot races, dates back to 203 AD, during the reign of Emperor Septimus Severus. Under Constantine the Great, the area was expanded to 480 meters by 118 meters. To appreciate its scale, stand next to the Kaiser Wilhelm Fountain, where race cars and spectators entered. The central part of the square, called “spina,” was adorned with statues and monuments.
